Global Compact Mexico and the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Investing Working Group, presented, on October 5, the guide “Good practices around sustainable investing” at the Santa Fe site of EGADE Business School -Tecnológico de Monterrey.

During the launch event, Carlos Vargas, research professor in the Department of Business Finance and Economics of EGADE Business School, moderated a panel on the document with the participation of Alvaro Vertiz, COO and Strategy director at BlackRock México; Salvador Vertiz, CEO of Argón Ingeniería y Sustentabilidad; Estefanía Rubio, Capital Market leader at GRI; and Iker Vinageras, head of ESG at BIVA.

The panelists commented that the guide's purpose is to share concrete good practices that the private sector can implement, in the short, medium, and long term, to make progress towards achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda in Mexico.

The document describes, in a general way, the actions that companies and organizations can carry out to facilitate the transition toward a sustainable economy in the country.

The event highlighted the good practices related to sustainable investing and published in the guide, such as:

I. Importance of standardized reporting for managing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors in companies and the challenges we face in achieving a standardized methodology.

II. Importance of the quality and dissemination of data, as well as the heterogeneity of information for international institutional investors, reporting agencies, consumers, employees, etc.

III. Sustainability as an integral part of the business strategy, from supply chains to the relationship with the societies in which the companies operate; a holistic view of enterprises.

IV. The environmental, social and economic risks of climate change in the short and long term and its impact on companies and global society, focusing on the role of the private and public sectors in the transition towards a greener economy.

V. Importance of a solid, transparent Corporate Governance in companies as a growth driver.

VI. Stakeholder Capitalism is an alternative model to capitalism, which seeks to promote the inclusion of all the individuals related to the company (employees, shareholders, suppliers, communities, etc.).

These points, among others, are analyzed in the guide and reflect the collective effort of the organizations that make up the Working Group, stressing the challenges and good practices around sustainable investing in Mexico and that can be adopted by small, medium, and large enterprises alike.

Other participants in the presentation were Igor Rivera, director of the Executive MBA at EGADE Business School; Carlos Mendieta, interim chairman of the Global Compact Mexico Board; and Odracir Barquera, general director of Strategy, CCE.

Sustainable Investing is one of these working groups and was formed in August 2021 with 22 participants from different industries, including financial groups, stock exchanges, investors, consultants and educational institutions, such as Afore XXI Banorte, Alianza por la Inversión de Impacto, Argón Ingeniería y Sostenibilidad, BBVA, BlackRock, Boston Consulting Group, BIVA, BMV, CEMEX, Citibanamex, Ecovalores, Global Reporting Initiative, Grupo AXO, Iluméxico, IPADE, KPMG, Orbia, Russell Reynolds, Santander, EGADE Business School, Universidad Panamericana and Value Reporting Foundation.
