Despite the benefits that their talent brings to organizations, the workplace inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities still faces significant challenges.
This was the central theme of Episode 190 of Territorio Negocios, hosted by Eduardo Aguiñaga, National Director of Full-Time Programs at EGADE Business School.
The episode featured Lucila Osorio, research professor at EGADE Business School, and Omar Cubos, activist and member of the State Citizens' Council for People with Disabilities of Nuevo León.
Both guests emphasized eliminating stereotypes and promoting more inclusive work environments.
"One of the biggest obstacles is independence. Many parents fear their children are not ready to face the workforce," explained Cubos.
Communication difficulties add to these challenges: "Often, instructions are given unclearly, and people think we don't understand, but the issue is that they don't explain things in enough detail."
From a business perspective, Osorio highlighted that inclusion not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also strengthens organizations.
The researcher stated, "Integrating this talent fosters diversity, creates warmer environments, and humanizes the service experience. "
However, resistance remains: "Some companies fear that communicating with employees with disabilities will be difficult, but we have seen successful cases where, with proper training, they can perform their roles efficiently," noted Osorio.
Cubos shared inspiring examples, including his story: "I started as an assistant and now support the manufacturing process. We want people to stop being surprised when they see us advancing because we strive to grow and leave our mark on the world."
