Green finance promotes the development of an economy centered on positive environmental impact.

To delve into this topic, episode 199 of Territorio Negocios featured a conversation with Aidee Olmos, Head of Corporate Sustainability at HSBC Mexico and Latin America, and Pablo Pérez Akaki, regional leader for Mexico City at the FAIR Center of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

The discussion was moderated by Eva Guerra, Associate Dean of EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey, who opened by highlighting that the green bond market reached USD 2.36 trillion in 2023.

This growth has driven capital into projects focused on renewable energy, pollution control, biodiversity conservation, and the circular economy, while creating opportunities for financial inclusion and social impact.

In this context, Olmos pointed to the expansion of green investments in Latin America: “We’ve seen it mainly in Brazil, Chile, and clearly in Mexico.” In the latter, she emphasized issuing green bonds supporting renewable energy and sustainable water management projects.

“According to some studies, these investments surpassed USD 10 billion in 2023,” she added.

Olmos also outlined various investor profiles: beginners investing in ETFs with companies that meet high environmental and social standards; intermediate investors turning to green bonds; and advanced investors supporting startups.

Pérez stressed the value of financial inclusion tools in managing projects, planning, and navigating risks.

He noted that green finance initiatives should address more than just economic impact. They should also aim to foster a healthier, more equitable society with long-term profitability.

“Undoubtedly, this will allow for better allocation of the resources available in financial markets,” he said.
