EGADE Professor Wins his Second EFMD Case Writing Prize

Submitted by jose.paz on Mon, 04/19/2021 - 16:39

Work on a Colombian cement company, in whose writing Ezequiel Reficco collaborated, is distinguished in the category of business cases in Latin America.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The pedagogical case study “The internationalization of Cementos Argos”, the result of a collaboration between Ezequiel Reficco, EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey professor, and Esteban R. Brenes and Luciano Ciravegna, INCAE Business School professors, was awarded a prize in the 2020 Case Writing Competition of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

EFMD is an organization recognized globally as an accreditation body for business schools. Its EQUIS accreditation, which EGADE possesses, forms part of the “triple crown”, the highest recognition a business school can obtain internationally.

The EFMD Case Writing Competition is an annual recognition of the most innovative pedagogical cases, with 16 prize categories in the latest edition. The Argos case was the  winner in the category “Business Cases in Latin America”, sponsored by Universidad Externado de Colombia.

"In my opinion, the EFMD case writing competition is a golden opportunity to showcase the excellent work executed by Latin American companies, allowing them to gain visibility among educators from other regions. I would like to thank the organizers for generating this platform, which creates incentives for teachers from every corner of the globe to engage in case research," Ezequiel Reficco commented.

This is the second time that Reficco has been recognized in this competition. In the 2018 edition, his pedagogical case “For&From: Inditex Group’s Social Franchise” was the winner in the category “Inclusive Business Models”.

This pedagogical case emerged in October 2014, when the Cementos Argos Board of Directors and Management Team were looking for a way to capitalize on the announcement of the merger between Holcim and Lafarge for the company’s expansion. The company resulting from the Holcim-Lafarge merger would have to disinvest in several countries, including Brazil and Canada, and the Management Team wanted to know whether Argos should take advantage of this opportunity to acquire assets in those markets.

The company’s Board of Directors believed that Argos had the potential to increase shareholder value significantly, and driving its international expansion seemed to be the most attractive option to achieve this. However, determining where the company should expand to required careful analysis.

“The internationalization of Cementos Argos” forms part of the CLADEA-BALAS Case Consortium (CBCC) collection, created in partnership with Harvard Business Publishing, and to which EGADE belongs.

Ezequiel Reficco has an extensive background in case methods. During the eight years he was connected to Harvard Business School, from 2000 to 2008, a large part of his work centered around case development and his participation on the HBS Review Committee, a forum that evaluated the quality of external cases seeking publication through Harvard Business Publishing (HBP). He was the editor in charge of the two sole collections of Latin American cases published through HBP: CBCC, from 2013 to 2018, and the Social Enterprise Knowledge Network (SEKN), between 2015 and 2018.

In addition, he has founded case production centers at Universidad de San Andrés (Buenos Aires) and Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá). In the last decade, he has trained colleagues in case methods at diverse business schools in America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

He is currently leading the EGADE Business School Case Hub. This center supports the development of attitudes, knowledge and teaching skills regarding the case method, through the training and accompaniment of faculty who are interested in this methodology; the development of practical skills for case teaching, with workshops for testing the cases produced by the school’s professors; and the publication of cases in internationally visible collections, facilitating material, human and intellectual resources to all the faculty members committed to this methodology.

FAIR EGADE Mastercard

The Center for Financial Access, Inclusion and Research (FAIR) is officially launched during the first day of the Financial Fairplay Week.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Today, Tecnológico de Monterrey, in partnership with the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth (CIG), officially launched the Center for Financial Access, Inclusion and Research (FAIR).

This new entity, which forms part of the Tec's Undergraduate Business School and EGADE Business School Ecosystem of Centers, will foster the development of a fairer, more inclusive financial system and a sustainable economy that will contribute to improving living conditions for the most vulnerable populations in Mexico and Latin America.

FAIR, which began operating in January, will serve as a center for sharing knowledge and expanding solutions that can accelerate the pace of financial and digital inclusion across the region.

During its first year, the center will be partnering with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad de los Andes - Colombia, and will also receive advice from a renowned group of experts in financial inclusion and innovation, including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, ECLAC and the UN.

Financial inclusion has been identified as one of the contributing factors to the accomplishment of seven of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Despite the progress made over the last decade, there are still more than 200 million unbanked adults in Latin America, including women, people who live in rural communities, and people who are unemployed or work in the informal sector. In the particular case of Mexico, just 37% of the population has a bank account, positioning the country below the average for Latin America.

“The creation of the FAIR Center provides a space for the Tecnológico de Monterrey community to contribute to the development and wellbeing of our country through academic projects, high-impact research, and the promotion of dialogue and search for solutions. I would like to thank the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and the School of Business for exercising a conscious leadership and prioritizing the financial inclusion of vulnerable groups in order to generate a fairer, more prosperous Mexico,” commented David Garza, Rector and Executive President of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

FAIR was launched during the opening day of one of its very first initiatives, the Financial Fair Play Week, a virtual event that will take place from April 12 to 16, offering a variety of discussion panels, conferences, and talks on financial culture and inclusion in Mexico.

“At Mastercard, we are aware that financial inclusion is actually a social inclusion process which can make the difference between poverty and prosperity by offering people the necessary tools to achieve financial security and improve their quality of life. For Mastercard, financial inclusion has always been a shared responsibility, which is why we launched the initiative Tech for Good Partnership last year with partners from the private sector, and we are excited to continue this effort with the creation of FAIR and the implementation of the Financial Fair Play Week. Tec de Monterrey will undoubtedly be a magnificent ally in achieving our shared objective of creating equal opportunities for all,” said Laura Cruz, Country Manager, Mastercard México.

Attendees on behalf of Tec at the presentation of FAIR were Juan Pablo Murra Lascurain, Rector of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs; Ignacio de la Vega, Executive Associate Provost of Academic Affairs, Faculty and Internationalization; María Elena Vázquez, Interim Dean of the SchoAssociate Provostol of Business; Osmar Zavaleta, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; and Felipe Pérez, Director of the Center for Financial Access, Inclusion and Research.

In addition, Mastercard was represented by Michael Froman, Vice Chairman and President, Strategic Growth, and Arturo Franco, Vice President of CIG.

Further information on the Center for Financial Access, Inclusion and Research (FAIR) can be found here.

#ForoWE: Women’s Participation in the Business Sector and Private Capital Industry

María Ariza, BIVA CEO, offered a keynote address in the Women Empowered Forum, organized by Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship students.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The low level of representation by women in the business sector and the economic benefits of increasing female participation were addressed by María Ariza, CEO of Mexico’s Institutional Stock Exchange (BIVA), within the Women Empowered Forum.

In her keynote speech, the executive explained that women are underrepresented at every level of the corporate hierarchy, despite comprising 51% of the population and 43% of Mexico’s workforce.

She pointed out that, at the entry-level, there are almost twice as many men as women, while women’s presence falls to 25% at managerial and executive levels, and the percentage of female talent in C-Level positions is just 10%.

Therefore, she explained that it is 88 times more likely that a man will make it to a C-Level position, and 200,000 junior female employees need to be recruited for one woman to reach the executive committee.

In addition, Ariza commented that one in three companies lack programs or procedures to increase women’s participation, and that the pay gap is 34% in Mexico for performing the same work.

“If were to close the pay gap, Mexico’s PIB would grow 70%,” she affirmed, based on data from the Women Matter MX study.

The former Amexcap CEO also addressed women’s participation in Mexico’s Private Capital Industry.

She specified that 84% of entrepreneurial capital funds do not have a single woman on their investment team, and just 4% of partners are women.

This, she explained, is a problem for industry, since it has been proved that funds with gender-diverse working teams and leadership positions take better investment decisions.

“And speaking of female entrepreneurs, just 11% of companies backed by entrepreneurial capital were founded by women. There is an enormous gap in this sense,” said the Board Member of the Tecnológico de Monterrey School of Business.

Ariza highlighted the work of Mujeres Invirtiendo, a community of over 100 women from the Private Capital Industry that seeks to promote women’s participation in investment teams.

“We know that if more women participate in investment decisions, there will be more capital supporting women entrepreneurs, which, in turn, would generate greater profitability for companies and investors,” she said.

The Women Empowered Forum was organized by EGADE Business School Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship students, and held, in the virtual format, on March 24 and 25.

The forum brought together women corporate and entrepreneurship leaders who shared their stories and experiences with the aim of inspiring, generating change, and empowering women in business and organizations.

Ana Karen Ramírez, founder and CEO of Epic Queen, also contributed as a keynote speaker, addressing the jobs of the future and the gender gap in STEM.

The forum also included a “HeForShe” workshop and two discussion panels: “Entrepreneurial Women”, with Camila Lecaros, Managing Director at MassChallenge in Mexico; Deborah Dana, founder and CEO of Canasta Rosa; Gabriela León, cofounder and CEO of Gresmex; and Vanessa Yáñez, EGADE MBA graduate; and “Women in the World of Corporate Business”, with Karla Martínez de Salas, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Mexico and Latin America; Lucía Olvera, Marketing Director for Mexico and Central America at Campari Group; Karina Awad, Corporate Director - Human Resources, at Coca-Cola FEMSA; and Michelle Martin, Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship student.

#ForoWE: Jobs of the Future and the Gender Gap in STEM

Submitted by jose.paz on Mon, 04/05/2021 - 18:00

Entrepreneur Ana Karen Ramírez, founder and CEO of Epic Queen, is one of the keynote speakers in the first edition of the Women Empowered Forum.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The world has changed and many of the jobs we know today will no longer exist in 10 years’ time, stated Ana Karen Ramírez, founder and CEO of the social startup Epic Queen.

STEM degrees are the future and if women don’t study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, we won’t be part of the future,” the entrepreneur warned.

In a keynote conference within the first edition of the Women Empowered Forum, the Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship graduate explained that as a result of the gender stereotypes which persist at the individual, school, and social levels, women very often decide not to study or pursue a career in these fields.

This is reflected in the workforce, where the percentage of women in STEM is significantly lower than for men. For example, in the United States, women make up only 29% of those employed in these fields.

In order to close the STEM gender gap, Ramírez commented that Epic Queen offers educational options in science and technology exclusively for girls and women, to prepare them for the jobs of the future, and empower them by strengthening their courage, confidence, and resilience to defy stereotypes.

“Over my years working with girls at Epic Queen, I have seen that we need girls who dare to do things,” said the entrepreneur who won the EGADE Alumni Achievement Award 2019 and earned a place on the Innovators Under 35 Latin America 2020 Winners List, MIT Technology Review in Spanish.

The Women Empowered Forum was organized by EGADE Business School Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship students, and held, in the virtual format, on March 24 and 25.
