With the participation of its author, Carlos Scheel, and the Emeritus Dean of EGADE Business School, María de Lourdes Dieck-Assad, and before an audience who attended in person or virtually, the book Diseño de nuevos negocios de economía circular (Designing new circular-economy businesses) was presented on July 1.

This was the first time a hybrid event was held at the EGADE Business School in Monterrey since the beginning of the suspension of face-to-face activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scheel, an Emeritus Professor at EGADE Business School, explained that his book seeks to help businesspeople break with the linear business model and create contexts that contribute to producing sustainable wealth.

The researcher and SWIT (Sustainable Wealth creation based on disruptive Innovation and enabling Technologies) group leader presented his comments in Room EG 217 before a limited capacity audience and under strict safety and hygiene protocols.

"You have to innovate disruptively and break with the traditional. For that, you have to offer businessmen and entrepreneurs new innovation tools, promote a systemic vision, redefine value propositions and promote the circular economy," said Scheel.

Additionally, Dieck-Assad, who participated remotely, commented that creating businesses in the new circular economy is not an easy task, but it is pressing to do so because of the great problems that currently threaten the environment and society, and that will worsen in the future.

"You have to create business strategies that are sustainable and economically viable," said the academic.

Also taking part in the presentation were Osmar Zavaleta, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; Daniel Maranto, Director of EGADE Business School, Monterrey site; and Eduardo Aguiñaga, National Director of the Master in Business Management at EGADE Business School.

In Designing new circular-economy businesses, Scheel describes a methodology drawn from multiple cases and mainly focused on:

  • Identifying unusual opportunities
  • Analyzing the conditions of a region that are necessary and sufficient to implement circular value systems
  • Formulating the transition from a linear to a circular model
  • Articulating the dynamics of a circular phenomenon that generates extended added value
  • Designing the CEBM (Circular Economy Business Model)
  • Building and measuring the advantages of the CEBM
  • Formulating a business strategy to generate sustainable advantages that are very difficult for the competition, or linear businesses, to replicate, with the benefit of shared value and aligned with society and the environment.

The book is available on Amazon.

Flor López Cárdenas, CEO of HP Guadalajara, acted as the guest speaker in the ceremony.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The time has arrived! A select group of 106 graduates and alumni of the classes of June 2021, December 2020, and June 2020 from the EGADE Business School Guadalajara site, celebrated their graduation today in person.

Some of them attended the ceremony, held under the strictest safety and hygiene protocols, at Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Guadalajara Campus Sports Dome, while others chose to follow the graduation virtually through EGADE Business School’s transmission on Facebook Live and the live.tec.mx site.

EGADE Business School had not held an in-person graduation ceremony since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic until June 30 this year in Monterrey, and July 2nd in Mexico City.

For the first time ever, the graduates experienced a ceremony exclusively for EGADE Guadalajara, since on previous occasions they had participated in events held for all graduating Tec undergraduates and graduates.

The guest speaker was Flor López Cárdenas, CEO of HP Guadalajara, who delivered the first message of the ceremony.

The executive explained that digitization is constantly changing the way in which organizations work and the skills needed to flourish in business and, therefore, urged the graduates to continue to prepare themselves and develop new skills.

“We hadn’t anticipated a pandemic, but if you are transforming yourself and, together, we are redefining the future of work, we have managed to build a community of resilient individuals, willing to fight and progress," said the guest of honor.

López Cárdenas was accompanied on the presidium by Marisa Lazo Corvera, Chair of the Board, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara; Claudia Félix Sandoval, Vice-President of Tecnológico de Monterrey, western region; Osmar Zavaleta Vázquez, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; and Raúl Montalvo Corzo, Director of EGADE Business School, Guadalajara site.

“Today, EGADE’s prestige is being strengthened with each and every one of you, a class of graduates that have given everything for their education in these times of adversity and uncertainty caused by the pandemic. Today, you are receiving a huge commitment and responsibility. Your master’s degree has turned you into masters of change, transformation and entrepreneurship for human flourishing. We are certain that you will honor this degree,” Félix Sandoval said in his message addressed to the participants.

Moreover, Marcos Alberto Salazar Ruiz,  EGADE MBA graduate, offered a message on behalf of the classes of June 2021, December 2020, and June 2020.

“Today does not mark the end of a cycle, but, on the contrary, the start of a new one, rife with numerous challenges, but also great opportunities. I would like to invite you to put into practice, with the highest level of responsibility and commitment, the knowledge and values acquired at EGADE Business School and, in this way, let’s contribute to our society and environment, transforming them into a better place to live,” Salazar Ruiz stated.

Finally, Zavaleta Vázquez stressed that the current context requires new purposeful leaders, capable of generating value and sharing it with their communities, to reduce the gap between the most and least favored.

“You are the best-prepared leaders of any generation because you have experienced, studied, and combined your professional, academic, and personal commitments in a period of great uncertainty, successfully culminating your professional goals,” the dean stated.

The 106 master’s graduates taking part in this ceremony represent diverse Mexican states and 5 other countries (Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, and India).

Per program, in all three classes, 88 graduated from the EGADE MBAfrom the Master in Management, and 15 from the Master in Business Management.

With these new graduating classes EGADE Business School is fulfilling its firm commitment to contribute to the preparation of purposeful, conscious leaders, men, and women capable of generating shared value and transforming society.

EGADE Professor Collaborates on Book that Examines Talent Management in Latin America

Anabella Dávila contributes a chapter to Talent Management in Latin America: Pressing Issues and Best Practice, published by Routledge.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

In a recently published research, EGADE Business School professor, Anabella Dávilaexpands the concept of Socially Responsible Human Resource Management (SRHRM) as it is understood in Latin America.

Her work can be found in the chapter “How socially responsible HRM should be understood in Latin America”, included in the book Talent Management in Latin America: Pressing Issues and Best Practice, published by the British scientific publisher Routledge.

In an employee-context analysis, conducted through three theoretical approaches, Professor Dávila uncovers key roles for SRHRM beyond the development of employees’ attitudes and support towards the organization’s corporate social responsibility actions or employee wellbeing at work.

“The human capital paradigm requires that organizations invest in the development of their employees’ skills. However, local companies report that they face the need to build social infrastructure and develop the skills of non-employees because they offer educational opportunities to future employees. The institutional voids framework implies the challenge of labor market inefficiencies,” Dávila explained.

In Latin America, the researcher stated, human resource management promotes the strengthening of labor institutions leading a network of economic and social actors and taking advantage of the business group structure that incentivizes an internal market to access trained talent and assure decent income.

“The stakeholder perspective acknowledges the needs and demands of multiple stakeholders, including employees, families, and the community. Thus, stakeholders are also the beneficiaries of the human resource management policies and practices, and the area provides for their human development,” said the member of the Strategy and Management in Emerging Economies Strategic Focus Research Group of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

More than 13 international researchers collaborated on the book, which was edited by Jordi Trullen and Jaime Bonache, ESADE professors at Universidad Ramón Llull and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, respectively.

After living more than a year of social distancing and virtuality due to the pandemic, students of the EGADE Business School in Monterrey met again in person to celebrate the end of their graduate studies.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINES SCHOOL

Last night, EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey held its first in-person graduation ceremony since the start of the pandemic.

After living more than a year of social distancing and virtuality due to COVID-19, more than half of a select group of 449 graduates of the classes of June 2021, December 2020 and June 2020 of the EGADE's site in Monterrey met again in person in Tec de Monterrey’s Borregos Arena to celebrate the culmination of their graduate studies.

Some of the graduates chose to follow their graduation virtually through EGADE’s transmission on Facebook Live or the site live.tec.mx.

The 14 specialty, 422 master's and 13 doctorate graduates, taking part in the ceremony represented diverse entities in Mexico and 14 countries (Germany, Argentina, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States of America, France, Guatemala, the Netherlands, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela), and included successful entrepreneurs and business leaders from key industries of the country.

The presidium comprised Juan Pablo Murra Lascurain, Rector for Undergraduate and Graduate Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey; Osmar Zavaleta Vázquez, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; Laura Zapata Cantú, Associate Academic Dean of EGADE Business School; René Cabral Torres, Interim Associate Dean of Faculty Development at EGADE Business School; and Daniel Maranto Vargas, Director of EGADE Business School, Monterrey site.

During the ceremony, which was carried out under strict protocols of hygiene and safety, the names of the graduates were read out one by one, as well as the diplomas and double-degree programs that they had accredited and the honorable mentions for excellence awarded (equivalent to summa cum laude).

On hearing their names, the graduates walked onto the stage and greeted the presidium and their course companions from a distance, as well as their guests, who witnessed the ceremony from the stands.

Leopoldo Cedillo Villarreal, CEO of Grupo Proeza, was the guest speaker.

"Today, they are not only celebrating the termination of their postgraduate degrees in administration or finance, but they are also receiving a degree in resilience and adaptability, that also has a very high value for the market and for the complex world in which we are currently living," said the executive.

Osmar Zavaleta, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School, congratulated the graduates for this important professional and personal achievement.

"Companies need to adapt their business models to constant disruption and innovation, as well as to new consumer trends, so in the coming years new challenges and uncertain environments will put these young people to the test once again, but I am sure that the lessons learned in their postgraduate studies at EGADE Business School will help them to define new sustainable business models and exercise the leadership that our society requires," said Zavaleta.

Alicia Soto Burgueño, an EGADE Business School MBA graduate, gave a speech on behalf of the graduates of the classes of June 2021, December 2020 and June 2020.

“We are all distinguished by three things: motivation, discipline, and sacrifice. We all have a unique engine, a 'why' that keeps us going. That motivation was what inspired us to start and kept us going,” said Soto Burgueño.

The ceremony culminated with a message from Juan Pablo Murra Lascurain, Tecnológico de Monterrey's Rector for Higher Education, who underscored the importance of the graduates' vision and positive expectations of the world and the future. He also noted that the titanic tests facing society regarding health and climate change generate opportunities to imagine and create a better future for the organizations and communities of which they are part.

"Remember that, in the swearing-in ceremony, you committed to being leaders who transform your environment to build a better society, to being ethical and pursuing ideals that lead you and others to reach your full potential," said Murra Lascurain.

With these new graduating classes, the total number of academic degrees awarded by Tecnológico de Monterrey's EGADE Business School grew to 7,073, thus fulfilling its firm commitment to contribute to the formation of purposeful and conscious leaders, men and women capable of generating shared value and transforming society.

Today, the country and the entire world truly need leaders and companies that will generate a positive impact on society, and, precisely today, it gives me great pride to receive this award from the members of the alumni community, characterized by their leadership with a humanistic outlook,” Murray said.

The EGADE Alumni Achievement Award recognizes alumni whose professional activities have had a positive impact on TEC and its community.

Directors of the Eugenio Garza Sada Center and Merco Supermercados participate in the EGADE Future Forum series webinar.

By VALENTINA FLORES CÁCERES | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The responsibility and role of companies in making a positive contribution to the development of people and their communities was the topic addressed in the latest webinar of the EGADE Future Forum series

The session, titled “Conscious Enterprise for a More Prosperous Society”, was moderated by Christiane Molina, Director of the Conscious Enterprise Center at EGADE Business School.

“A wider impact is required, and companies should join forces, share successful practices and form a community of trust, of committed people,” stated Cícero Willis, Director of the Eugenio Garza Sada Center.

Javier Arteaga, Development Director at the supermarket chain Merco Supermercados, commented that companies should drive initiatives that will help their collaborators achieve their personal goals.

“If you are going to generate a business venture, instead of writing about what you are going to do, it would be better to define how it will benefit the world and how it can inspire your customers, collaborators, and partners,” Arteaga added.

Molina highlighted that last year, EGADE Business School, committed to the Mexican business and entrepreneurial ecosystem, launched the Decalogue for the Economic and Business Refounding of Mexico, which lists key aspects for reactivating the country through a more conscious business model in the face of the COVID-19 challenges.
