Thirty-two students from eight Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) member schools participated in the course on sustainable entrepreneurship in Latin America offered by EGADE Business School, within the June 2021 online edition of the EMBA Global Network Week.

The module called “Sustainable Entrepreneurship in LATAM: Towards a More Equitable and Innovative Economy” implied a learning, teamwork and connection experience, during which participants analyzed the worldwide emergence of social innovation and its most recent development in Mexico and the region.

Guided by EGADE Business School professors, Francisco Layrisse and Ezequiel Reficco, as well as other guest educators and social entrepreneurs, participants examined paradigms such as hybrid organizations and B corporations, and the tools and attitudes needed to lead a social innovation.

They also enjoyed cultural interactions on Mexican festivities, cuisine, music and clothing, as well as the most important museums and archeological sites in the country.

THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH EGADE

“I had an amazing week of intensive knowledge sharing at EGADE Business School. The GNAM program enriched my perspective about social entrepreneurs. The speakers and the students we interacted with made the experience unique and so valuable. Even considering the restriction imposed by social distancing, the moderator let us be a very integrated group. Thank you very much for the opportunity.”
Adriano Candido, FGV Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo, Brazil.

"Being a student at EGADE Business School, even just for the GNAM week, is an unforgettable experience. I learned so much about social and sustainable entrepreneurship, I met so many fascinating people who I wouldn’t have been able to meet anywhere else, and I always felt welcome. I loved the combination of studies and culture capsules, and how the hosts helped to make this a truly holistic experience.”
Lucy Literado, IE Business School, Spain.

"I had a very inspiring week at EGADE Business School in Mexico, learning about sustainable entrepreneurship through the Global Network. We learned about large and small companies that are having a positive impact across the world through sustainable (and profitable!) business models. This content should be compulsory at all business schools. I recommend that all business leaders should delve into the thrilling environment of the sustainable business spirit and learn that profits and social impact do not have to be a zero-sum game.”
Claire Dugan, ESMT Berlin, Germany.

"In these times of extraordinary challenges, it is important to keep our minds open to new ideas. During this Global Network Week, I had the privilege of being part of the EGADE course on sustainable entrepreneurship in Latin America. From multiple perspectives, I saw how these principles can lead to clear results on a small to large scale. Having been brought up by a Mexican mother (and grandma), learning about my heritage has been a pleasure. I hope to visit EGADE in the future and thank the personnel and see these initiatives in person.”
Michael Salmon, ESMT Berlin, Germany.

"My experience at the Global Network Week at EGADE Business School was incredible. The organizing team is so kind and helpful. The students are kind and polite, the professors are so enthusiastic and committed to the courses, and the programs are exciting, challenging and very important for the student’s future.”
Felipe Serrano, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Escuela de Negocios, Chile.

“I loved the experience in this Global Network Week. It was inspiring, and having the chance to collaborate with people worldwide was amazing! Fully recommended.”
José Luis Álvarez, EGADE Business School, Mexico.

EGADE STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD

A total of 84 EGADE Business School students, from the EGADE MBA, EGADE - UNC Charlotte MBA in Global Business & Strategy and Full-Time MBA in Innovation & Entrepreneurship programs, participated remotely in 19 modules delivered within June 2021 edition of the EMBA Global Network Week.

Toward the SDGs! EGADE students win two Flourish prizes for documenting innovations from Green Fluidics and Bioamin

Presenting in the 2021 edition of the global AIM2Flourish contest the stories of a solar biopanel and a biopesticide created by Mexican companies

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

EGADE Business School students were awarded two 2021 Flourish Prizes for documenting positive impact innovations from the Mexican companies Green Fluidics and Bioamin.

Every year, the AIM2Flourish global competition recognizes 17 business stories that contribute to the achievement of each of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year, an international jury selected the winning stories from among 77 finalist stories written by students from 31 universities in 17 countries under the direction of 35 professors.

The finalist stories were chosen, in turn, from 585 stories published on the AIM2Flourish website in 2020.

Professor Ezequiel Reficco directed the EGADE Business School students who received awards in this edition, for their explanations of a solar biopanel and a biopesticide, both created in Mexico.

AIM2Flourish is a global initiative of the Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit and the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, supported by the United Nations.

BIOPANEL SOLAR, GREEN FLUIDICS

The students of the Master in Finance at EGADE Business School, Ana Sofia González, Fatima Lewis Batres and Manuel Medina, are the authors of the award-winning story of the solar biopanel created by Green Fluidics, which contributes to the achievement of SDG #7: "Affordable and clean energy."

This company, founded in 2018 in Toluca, State of Mexico, created a solar panel made with microalgae and nanofluids, with the capacity to generate 160 watts per hour of electricity, that is 90% biodegradable.

"The microalgae act like plants that photosynthesize, absorbing CO2 and creating oxygen, while the nanofluids absorb solar radiation at high temperatures, thereby creating electricity,” the students pointed out.

To develop the story, they interviewed Adán Ramírez, co-founder and CTO of Green Fluidics, who suggests that sustainable cities and communities will be easier to achieve when the commercialization of this product grows.

BIOPESTICIDE, BIOAMIN

María Fernanda Castorena Elizondo, Víctor Campo Aguirre, Erick Ruben Calahorra Mejía, Alan Castillo and Adriana Aranda, also students of the Master in Finance, received the prize for their story of a biopesticide developed by the agro-industrial company Bioamin, founded in 2008 in Saltillo, Coahuila.

This botanical fungicide, whose trade name is Org Fung, contributes to the fulfillment of SDG #15: "Life on land" and is made from extracts of the creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), a plant endemic to the Mexican desert.

"It is a very efficient biopesticide that gives better and faster results than traditional pesticides," the students point out.

In an interview with Juan Osuna, CEO of Bioamin, they found that one of the main environmental benefits of Org Fung is the absence of chemical residues when it is used for disease control in crops.

GEM Report: Mexico’s Public Policy for Supporting Entrepreneurship Needs to be Reinforced

GEM Global Report Mexico

Tecnológico de Monterrey coordinated the investigation in Mexico for the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2020/2021 Global Report.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

At present, the world is experiencing diverse adverse effects in different areas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) recently published its 2020/2021 Global Report results, which analyzes how this situation has impacted the entrepreneurial ecosystem worldwide.

This edition of the GEM report was carried out in 44 countriesincluding Mexico, employing a unified methodology refined across more than 20 years.

The methodology assesses the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the financing, government policies and programs, entrepreneurship education, technology transfer, commercial and professional infrastructure, internal market openness, physical infrastructure, and social and cultural norms.

Through a survey, which, this year, enjoyed the participation of over 317 experts in Mexico, the study evaluated the countries through the National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI).

In 2020Mexico’s NECI score was 4.1 (on a scale of 1 to 10), down from 4.72 in 2019, placing it 33rd among the 44 participating countries.

In our country, the GEM study has been coordinated from the beginning, in 2001, by Tecnológico de Monterrey.

During 2020, the national team in charge of this effort was made up of José Ernesto Amorós, National Director of Doctoral Programs at EGADE Business School, and Elvira Naranjo Priego, a researcher from the Tec de Monterrey School of Social Sciences and Governance, among other professors and researchers.

“Entrepreneurship is not an isolated phenomenon. Apart from personal characteristics and motivations, the conditions of the environment play a fundamental role in fostering the creation of new businesses and their medium- and long-term success. In this research, we discovered that one of the major areas of opportunity for our country to promote a more favorable entrepreneurial ecosystem lies in reinforcing government policies and programs to support entrepreneurship,” Amorós explained.

Regarding Mexico’s NECI results, Naranjo Priego mentioned that “they also invite Mexico to underpin entrepreneurship education at the school level, while, as a country, we consolidate our outstanding aspects, such as infrastructure and education for entrepreneurship at the high school level, both of which are factors that connect us with other latitudes and generate the exchange of ideas to foster innovation.”

The researchers stated that the great challenge for the future of entrepreneurship in Mexico is to achieve a public-policy design that will facilitate business and create and formalize new companies.

They also indicated that transforming social perceptions of entrepreneurial activity will be key to achieving an environment that encourages public-private cooperation in a joint effort to reactivate the country’s economy.

Guest specialists from Genesys and LITS Adventures participated in the webinar “Customer Experience Management (CXM): designing memorable experiences”.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Chatbots and voicebots, which make it possible to automate company-customer conversations through Artificial Intelligence, are already a reality and their evolution and large-scale use continue to advance.

In this way, exponential technologies are here to stay and are key to the transformation of customer experience for business now and in the future.

This topic was discussed by guest specialists during the webinar “Customer Experience Management (CXM): designing memorable experiences” from the EGADE Future Forum series, moderated by Jaime Martínez Bowness, Director of EGADE Business School, Mexico City site.

“Without customer experience, we wouldn’t be able to think about surviving and growing. And, today, customer experience is enhanced by technology. Digital experiences are here to stay,” explained Liz Zavaleta, Director of Marketing and Communication at Genesys.

However, the expert emphasized that prioritizing empathy over the speed of business is still fundamental.

“Communicate to connect, not just to sell,” Zavaleta said.

In addition, Cédric Vialle, Director of Digital and E-commerce at LITS Adventures and EGADE Business School professor, highlighted the importance of considering customer lifetime value to build product and service ecosystems that will attract customers beyond the short term.

“Marketing makes the first sale, but customer service makes the next ones,” he said.

Up Close! Carlos Slim Domit Talks with Board Member Education Program Participants

Carlos Slim Domit

The Chair of the Board of Telmex, América Móvil, Grupo Carso, and Grupo Sanborns is invited to a session of the EGADE Business School Executive Education program.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Carlos Slim Domit met with participants of the EGADE Business School Executive Education Board Member Education Program, to share his experiences as a board member of various Mexican companies.

Answering a direct question from the attendees, the businessman talked about the qualities a board member should have.

“It depends on the company’s profile, but, in general, it should be a person who has an interest in the business, who undertakes, finds a way to contribute to improving it,” commented the Chair of the Board of Telmex, América Móvil, Grupo Carso and Grupo Sanborns.

In addition, Slim Domit stressed the value of the diversity and expertise that board members contribute to decision-making.

“The aim is for the board to have a variety of opinions, making it possible to touch on different points of the same decision, and question the financial decision, the creative vision in the case of new products or developments, or human resource issues regarding motivation or compensation programs,” he said.

Slim Domit highlighted the relevance of incorporating into the board people who are experts in specific areas, even if they are not entirely familiar with the business activity.

“A company such as Telmex, with, for example, huge technological dynamics, highly robust investment programs, a solid regulatory environment, a more sophisticated work environment, is not the same as an industrial firm with a single activity or marketing channel; so, it really depends on the company and the challenges it is dealing with to determine which approaches are the ones you need in a board of directors,” the son of businessman Carlos Slim Helú said.

The session, held remotely, enjoyed the participation of Juan Pablo Murra, Rector of Higher Education, Tecnológico de Monterrey; Jaime García Narro, Associate Dean of Executive Education, EGADE Business School, and Carlos Serrano, Director of the Board Member Education Program.

Targeting members of the Board of Directors, business owners, directors and executives, and strategic decision-makers, the Board Member Education program hones their competencies and provides specialized knowledge on how a Board of Directors function, including the reinvention of the business model, acquisition of companies as a growth strategy, and the successful continuance of the family business, among other key topics.
