Francisco Chávez Montalvo, EGADE MBA alumnus, has published the book Carrerapedia: La guía práctica para crecer profesionalmente, a practical professional growth guide in which he shares individual principles and strategies to design a career plan.

“Based on my personal and professional experience in Human Resources, I wrote this book to offer people a toolkit for developing their own career plan,” said Chávez Montalvo, who is also an adjunct professor at the Undergraduate Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

The author explained that many of the beliefs and paradigms about how to manage a professional career should be challenged and demystified.

“I detected this real need, and my objective was to share diverse reader-friendly advice, models, exercises and what I deem to be the 10 pillars for building a successful career plan,” he commented.

His book is oriented towards people who are interested in driving their professional career in any type of organization from any sector.

Although not its main focus, the book also provides tools for team leaders and colleagues in Human Resources seeking to advise their collaborators on how to manage their professional careers.

In addition, the book contains some useful resources for independent entrepreneurs and professionals.

Chávez Montalvo, apart from being an EGADE Business School graduate, holds a B.A. in Organizational Psychology from Tec de Monterrey, and has a solid professional background in the area of Human Resources in transnational corporations.

Carrerapedia, which is independently published, is available on Amazon.

Study on the Development of Intrapreneurs in Organizations to Drive Innovation in Latin America

Submitted by jose.paz on Tue, 07/20/2021 - 18:12

Cristian Granados Sánchez and Cris Bravo Monge, EGADE Business School professors, contribute a book chapter on entrepreneurial education.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

In a world that demands more and rapid innovation, organizations must drive the development of high-potential intrapreneurs, while ensuring that they receive all the organizational support they need.

These are the conclusions of a study by Cristian Granados Sánchez and Cris Bravo Monge, EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey professors, included in the book Innovation in Global Entrepreneurship Education. Teaching Entrepreneurship in Practice, published by the British publisher Edward Elgar.

In their chapter “The development of high-potential intrapreneurs: an executive education approach to drive innovation in Latin American companies”, the academics describe the role of the intrapreneur and how organizations use executive education and corporate universities to boost the development of leadership and innovation.

“The study not only addresses which competencies intrapreneurs have or could have, but also reflects on the difference between developing them and actually using them in companies. We recommend that organizations should create an innovation culture and ecosystem that supports intrapreneurs, thereby making it possible to identify opportunities and develop innovations,” explained Granados Sánchez, research professor, Department of Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation.

The coauthors stress that a high-potential entrepreneur must have openness and creativity, humility, resilience/tolerance to uncertainty, systemic thinking, agility, and also be inspiring and empowering, competencies they assure can be taught or developed through executive education.

"We work with companies in consulting and executive education programs, and one of the topics they most frequently request is intrapreneurship. The fact that there was no clear definition of intrapreneurship, or of the characteristics or competencies of intrapreneurs, or how they can be developed, inspired us to carry out this study,”  stated Bravo Monge, adjunct professor, Department of Strategy and Leadership.

The chapter will be presented within the framework of the 81st Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, the world's premier event for scholarly engagement around management and organization research.

Tec and IBM Partner to Incorporate IBM Skills Academy into the EGADE Master In Business Analytics

IBM Skills Academy

EGADE Business School’s Master in Business Analytics students will have access to IBM’s resources to develop exponential technology management skills.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Tecnológico de Monterrey and IBM announced an agreement today to incorporate the IBM Skills Academy program into the Master in Business Analytics curriculum at EGADE Business School.

The first generation of this graduate program commenced in April this year. The IBM program will ensure that the professionals enrolled in this master’s degree will develop skills to understand and capitalize on new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud, Blockchain, Quantum Computing, Cybersecurity, IoT, and Data Science.

The relevance of the partnership between IBM and Tec de Monterrey is accentuated in the current scenario. A study conducted by the IBM Institute of Business Value found that up to 120 million collaborators surveyed in the 12 largest economies in the world may need to be retrained or reeducated owing to the growth of AI and automation over the next three years, resulting from the accelerated technology development that companies are experiencing worldwide.

The challenge, according to the same investigation, has only been exacerbated during the pandemic, to the extent that C-Suite executives who have accelerated digital transformation in their organizations report that their teams’ lack of technological skills is one of the greatest obstacles to progress in the current and future business context.

“For us at IBM, working in conjunction with highly prestigious educational institutions, such as EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey, is key to continuing to contribute to the preparation of new generations of transformational leaders for business and in society,” commented Eduardo Gutiérrez, President and CEO of IBM México.

“The future of organizations will depend on the transformation of processes, products, services, culture, structure, and business models, to generate greater innovation and value for clients. With the incorporation of the IBM Skills Academy program into the Master in Business Analytics, we seek to consolidate our purpose of developing omnipreneurial leaders with a comprehensive business vision and the necessary competencies to transform their organizations and contribute with innovative solutions to the challenges faced by society,” commented Osmar Zavaleta, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey.

With this agreement, Master in Business Analytics students have access to the IBM Skills Academy digital platform, which presents laboratories, conferences, and practical industry cases focused on solving real business problems, among other types of content that provide access to digital badges that are highly valued in the labor market and enjoy global recognition.

The IBM Skills Academy offers the Master in Business Analytics faculty diverse training programs based on the "Train-the-Trainer" (T3) methodology, run by IBM experts, to maximize their impact and benefit students focused on developing the skills required to cope with the changes currently being experienced by industries with emerging and open-source technologies.

EGADE Business School’s two-year Master in Business Analytics program, taught in Spanish, develops a disruptive mentality in students based on data science and leadership competencies to accelerate digital transformation and make better use of organizations’ opportunities in the growing global digital economy.

IBM Skills Academy is an educational project that provides content, dynamics and programs to build students’ most critical technological skills, enabling them to contribute with their professional preparation. The initiative focuses on emergent digital fields, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, blockchain, cloud, IoT, Design Thinking, and Quantum.

EGADE Future Forum: Mexico’s Economic Policy and Growth Forecast

Submitted by jose.paz on Sun, 07/11/2021 - 12:28
Everardo Elizondo

Although the Mexican economy is expected to grow by 5% in 2021, the perspectives towards 2022 and 2023 are less optimistic, warns the economist Everardo Elizondo.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

Even though the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has diminished, the end of its impact is not imminent, warned Everardo Elizondo, EGADE Business School professor.

“During 2020, unprecedented ‘protection’ and ‘support’ actions were implemented by governments, the effects of which can still be felt to this day,” said the former Deputy Governor of Banco de México.

The consequences for Mexico’s economy have been huge, even greater than those observed in the United States; however, the "neighborhood effect" has played an important and positive role recently, and will continue to do so, Elizondo affirmed.

The economist participated in the EGADE Future Forum series, in the webinar “Mexico’s economic perspectives, 2021-2022”, moderated by Raúl Montalvo, Director of EGADE Business School, Guadalajara.

“It is important to be aware of the relationship between investment and growth; it is a structural aspect of Mexico’s economy, and is the secular weakness of investment, which has been decreasing,” Elizondo explained.

Without robust investment, he said, there will be no capital accumulation per worker and, consequently, no sustained productivity growth, without which the population’s wellbeing cannot grow.

“Mexico’s economic policy has discouraged private investment,” he declared.

Despite regarding inflation as transitory, Elizondo recalled, Banxico considered its upsurge as risky, deciding on June 24 to increase the target rate by 25 percentage points.

“Mexico has maintained a ‘conservative’ stance in terms of tax incentives,” he said.

Regarding the economic growth forecast, he mentioned that the perspective of analysts is that, in 2023, it will go back to the 2 percent that has been characteristic of the Mexican economy for over a generation.

“We are going to be a long way from returning to pre-pandemic levels (5 percent in 2021, and 3 percent in 2022),” Elizondo said.

A book on the circular economy by Carlos Scheel is presented in a hybrid event

Carlos Scheel Economía Circular

María de Lourdes Dieck-Assad, Emeritus Dean of EGADE Business School, accompanied the author and commented on his work remotely.

By INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNICATION | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

With the participation of its author, Carlos Scheel, and the Emeritus Dean of EGADE Business School, María de Lourdes Dieck-Assad, and before an audience who attended in person or virtually, the book Diseño de nuevos negocios de economía circular (Designing new circular-economy businesses) was presented on July 1.

This was the first time a hybrid event was held at the EGADE Business School in Monterrey since the beginning of the suspension of face-to-face activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scheel, an Emeritus Professor at EGADE Business School, explained that his book seeks to help businesspeople break with the linear business model and create contexts that contribute to producing sustainable wealth.

The researcher and SWIT (Sustainable Wealth creation based on disruptive Innovation and enabling Technologies) group leader presented his comments in Room EG 217 before a limited capacity audience and under strict safety and hygiene protocols.

"You have to innovate disruptively and break with the traditional. For that, you have to offer businessmen and entrepreneurs new innovation tools, promote a systemic vision, redefine value propositions and promote the circular economy," said Scheel.

Additionally, Dieck-Assad, who participated remotely, commented that creating businesses in the new circular economy is not an easy task, but it is pressing to do so because of the great problems that currently threaten the environment and society, and that will worsen in the future.

"You have to create business strategies that are sustainable and economically viable," said the academic.

Also taking part in the presentation were Osmar Zavaleta, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; Daniel Maranto, Director of EGADE Business School, Monterrey site; and Eduardo Aguiñaga, National Director of the Master in Business Management at EGADE Business School.

In Designing new circular-economy businesses, Scheel describes a methodology drawn from multiple cases and mainly focused on:

  • Identifying unusual opportunities
  • Analyzing the conditions of a region that are necessary and sufficient to implement circular value systems
  • Formulating the transition from a linear to a circular model
  • Articulating the dynamics of a circular phenomenon that generates extended added value
  • Designing the CEBM (Circular Economy Business Model)
  • Building and measuring the advantages of the CEBM
  • Formulating a business strategy to generate sustainable advantages that are very difficult for the competition, or linear businesses, to replicate, with the benefit of shared value and aligned with society and the environment.

The book is available on Amazon.

Flor López Cárdenas, CEO of HP Guadalajara, acted as the guest speaker in the ceremony.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The time has arrived! A select group of 106 graduates and alumni of the classes of June 2021, December 2020, and June 2020 from the EGADE Business School Guadalajara site, celebrated their graduation today in person.

Some of them attended the ceremony, held under the strictest safety and hygiene protocols, at Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Guadalajara Campus Sports Dome, while others chose to follow the graduation virtually through EGADE Business School’s transmission on Facebook Live and the live.tec.mx site.

EGADE Business School had not held an in-person graduation ceremony since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic until June 30 this year in Monterrey, and July 2nd in Mexico City.

For the first time ever, the graduates experienced a ceremony exclusively for EGADE Guadalajara, since on previous occasions they had participated in events held for all graduating Tec undergraduates and graduates.

The guest speaker was Flor López Cárdenas, CEO of HP Guadalajara, who delivered the first message of the ceremony.

The executive explained that digitization is constantly changing the way in which organizations work and the skills needed to flourish in business and, therefore, urged the graduates to continue to prepare themselves and develop new skills.

“We hadn’t anticipated a pandemic, but if you are transforming yourself and, together, we are redefining the future of work, we have managed to build a community of resilient individuals, willing to fight and progress," said the guest of honor.

López Cárdenas was accompanied on the presidium by Marisa Lazo Corvera, Chair of the Board, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara; Claudia Félix Sandoval, Vice-President of Tecnológico de Monterrey, western region; Osmar Zavaleta Vázquez, Interim Dean of EGADE Business School; and Raúl Montalvo Corzo, Director of EGADE Business School, Guadalajara site.

“Today, EGADE’s prestige is being strengthened with each and every one of you, a class of graduates that have given everything for their education in these times of adversity and uncertainty caused by the pandemic. Today, you are receiving a huge commitment and responsibility. Your master’s degree has turned you into masters of change, transformation and entrepreneurship for human flourishing. We are certain that you will honor this degree,” Félix Sandoval said in his message addressed to the participants.

Moreover, Marcos Alberto Salazar Ruiz,  EGADE MBA graduate, offered a message on behalf of the classes of June 2021, December 2020, and June 2020.

“Today does not mark the end of a cycle, but, on the contrary, the start of a new one, rife with numerous challenges, but also great opportunities. I would like to invite you to put into practice, with the highest level of responsibility and commitment, the knowledge and values acquired at EGADE Business School and, in this way, let’s contribute to our society and environment, transforming them into a better place to live,” Salazar Ruiz stated.

Finally, Zavaleta Vázquez stressed that the current context requires new purposeful leaders, capable of generating value and sharing it with their communities, to reduce the gap between the most and least favored.

“You are the best-prepared leaders of any generation because you have experienced, studied, and combined your professional, academic, and personal commitments in a period of great uncertainty, successfully culminating your professional goals,” the dean stated.

The 106 master’s graduates taking part in this ceremony represent diverse Mexican states and 5 other countries (Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, and India).

Per program, in all three classes, 88 graduated from the EGADE MBAfrom the Master in Management, and 15 from the Master in Business Management.

With these new graduating classes EGADE Business School is fulfilling its firm commitment to contribute to the preparation of purposeful, conscious leaders, men, and women capable of generating shared value and transforming society.
