A humanistic mindset can guide technological development to balance artificial intelligence advancements with the protection of jobs, privacy, and human rights.
In Territorio Negocios, Enrique Tamés, professor in the Department of Strategy and Leadership at EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Cristina Martínez, founder of PIT Policy Lab, discussed this topic with Eva Guerra, Associate Academic Dean of EGADE Business School.
Martínez shared projects that positively impacted society by employing artificial intelligence aligned with sustainable development goals. “These kinds of cases also teach us about the positive impacts we want to scale and replicate throughout our region,” she commented.
On the other hand, Tamés proposed the integration of humanism and technology in both directions: “We need users of technology who have a deep humanistic reflection, but also people from the humanities who understand these technological advances to get them the best possible advance.”
He also highlighted the article How People Are Really Using Gen AI in 2025 by Marc Zao-Sanders, which concludes that the three main AI searches in the last year are related to “deeply human matters,” such as therapy, organization, and the search for purpose.
The main concerns regarding the use of AI were addressed and Martínez mentioned the EPOCH methodology developed at MIT by Isabella Loaiza, which highlights human skills and competencies that technology cannot replace.
“I prefer a framework that refers to enhancing human capacities rather than automating them,” she said.
Finally, Tamés emphasized the importance of the involvement of companies, political systems, and education to manage the uncertainty surrounding AI by questioning, generating public policies, and building education based on competencies for human flourishing.
“Artificial intelligence does not help us understand the world. The only ones who can understand it right now are human beings. We must reach collective agreements.”
