EGADE Business School—Tecnológico de Monterrey, the only Mexican institution in the Global Innovation Index (GII) Academic Network, provided significant input for the research of the 2024 global report.

The school, represented by Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School, and José Ernesto Amorós, associate dean of faculty, provided key knowledge and analyses for the preparation of the index.

Amorós, who also leads Tec's Entrepreneurship and Innovation with Impact Research Group, commented: "Mexico's results in the GII reflect not only the country's potential but also the challenges we face in rethinking the future of business in Mexico and Latin America. Promoting policies and strategies that impact the region's sustainable development and strengthen our innovative capabilities is crucial. We need to improve our rule of law and regulatory framework to offer more incentives for innovation, particularly in the private sector."

In the GII 2024, Mexico ranked 56th globally, climbing two places compared to the previous year. In Latin America, the country is ranked third, just behind Brazil and Chile, establishing itself as a key player in the region's technological and creative sectors.

The report highlights Mexico's strengths in specific areas, such as creative goods exports, where it ranks 1st worldwide, and high-tech exports, in 11th place. These results underscore the country's competitiveness in high-value-added industries.

Mexico ranks 10th among 34 economies in the index for upper-middle-income economies, demonstrating its competitiveness compared to countries with similar economic characteristics. Furthermore, it stands out globally in innovation output (52nd place) compared to innovation input (73rd place), indicating that it is more efficient in converting its investments in innovation into tangible results. However, Mexico does not have any science and technology clusters in the global top 100, an area in which it could strengthen its performance.

On the other hand, Mexico displays weaknesses in some key indicators. Its lowest rankings are in Institutions, 106th place, reflecting challenges in the quality of the institutional environment; Infrastructure, 71st place, an area that requires improvement through investment; and Human Capital and Research, 63rd place, underlining the need to strengthen investment in education and scientific research.

The GII, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), now in its 17th edition, gauges 133 economies across the world, measuring not only technological advances but also social innovations and business models that promote sustainable and inclusive development.

The community aims to connect business leaders, promote the exchange of best practices, and facilitate networking to drive organizational innovation.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

EGADE Business SchoolTecnológico de Monterrey officially launched the EGADE Innovation Community in Monterrey on October 8, consolidating its commitment to connecting and collaborating with innovation leaders to accelerate business development in the region.

This professional community has gone from strength to strength in Mexico City since its creation in 2023, propelled by Fernando Moya, director of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation at EGADE Business School, and Cristian Granados, professor in the same department.

The community is now expanding to Monterrey to promote the exchange of best practices and business networks.

Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the school’s strategy and commitment to innovation as a driver of sustainable development in Latin America.

Cristian Granados explained that the EGADE Innovation Community emerged in Mexico City in response to the initiative of Alma Álvarez, Global Innovation director for Grupo Bimbo, and has grown with itinerant sessions at the corporate offices of BBVA, McKinsey, Amazon, and Bayer, among others, addressing key topics such as decarbonization, clean energy and innovation culture.

The academic stressed that the community is based on four pillars: knowledge, networking, co-creation, and challenges, and that EGADE Business School acts as a neutral space where its members can share their challenges and experiences in a climate of trust.

The event included a panel moderated by Isaac Lemus, professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation at EGADE Business School, with the participation of Elisa Escalante, Marketing director at Oracle; Carlos Flores, Business Development leader at Wayra Hispam; and André Soresini, general director of the Vaccine Unit at Sanofi México.

They discussed topics such as the community’s impact on innovation management, the importance of capitalizing on professional diversity to foster innovation, and the prominent trends that affect industries.

Escalante mentioned that the community's diversity has enriched the way they approach challenges at Oracle, noting that diverse professional experiences enable more complete, effective solutions.

Flores commented that the community's "white flag" approach has been crucial to sharing challenges and solutions openly between companies from different sectors and highlighted that cross-sector collaboration enriches ideas.

Soresini then indicated that the community has allowed him to explore vulnerabilities and learn in a safe space, recognizing that problems in innovation are common to multiple industries.

The event ended with announcements on the next sessions in Monterrey and the launch of the EGADE Innovation Community in Guadalajara. It was followed by a networking space in which the participants had the opportunity to strengthen ties and share experiences.

According to a report by Arthur D. Little presented during the event, only 13% of CEOs have adopted a comprehensive AI strategy at the organizational level.

By JOSÉ ÁNGEL DE LA PAZ | EGADE BUSINESS SCHOOL

EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey invited business leaders to dialogue on the impact of artificial intelligence and the current economic context.

The event, held on September 18 at the Monterrey site, featured a dialogue on the main trends defining business growth, highlighting AI as a key driver.

The meeting included two discussion panels and the presentation of the report "CEO Insights 2024: Positive in an Uncertain World: Confident CEOs Reskill Companies for AI-Driven Growth" by the consulting firm Arthur D. Little, based on interviews with 282 CEOs of companies with revenues exceeding a billion dollars.

Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School, stressed that the school seeks to be a space for discussing strategic issues that impact the future of business.

"At EGADE, we believe that business is a driving force in transforming realities, always in an innovative, ethical, and sustainable way," he said.

THE IMPACT OF AI ON MEXICAN INDUSTRIES

In the panel "The impact of AI on Mexican industries," Eva Guerra, academic associate dean of EGADE Business School, explained the relevance of AI for the future of Mexican companies.

"Understanding not only the potential of artificial intelligence but also how we can prepare to integrate it into all our operations strategically is essential. AI not only optimizes processes, but also redefines the future of business, and we need to make sure that our organizations are ready to adapt to this transformation," the scholar said.

Afterward, Ricardo Murcio, professor of Strategy and Leadership at EGADE Business School, pointed out the importance of talent reskilling.

"We must prepare our collaborators to understand and use AI as a powerful tool," said Murcio.

Paul Maya, general director of Atos Mexico, highlighted how artificial intelligence can complement and enhance human capabilities. "AI isn't going to replace jobs, but rather complement them, helping companies improve their efficiency and optimize critical processes," the executive explained.

Guillem Casahuga.  The Telecom and Technology partner at Arthur D. Little emphasized how important it is for companies to think of new ways to market their AI-related capabilities.

"Artificial intelligence should not only be used to optimize internal processes but also to open up new business opportunities in other sectors," the consultant stated.

GROWTH PROSPECTS IN MEXICO

In addition, the panel "Growth Prospects in Mexico," moderated by Marc Palacios, LATAM partner at Arthur D. Little, addressed the country's economic potential.

Jesús Ibáñez, vice president of Operations at Grupo LEGO México, stressed the growth of the Monterrey plant and access to the North American market.

"We can see great potential in the region, not only in Mexico but also across Latin America," the VP said.

Claudia Jañez, CEO of ConMéxico, said that companies need to be more proactive in ensuring a safe environment for investment.

"Companies must be more vocal in order to ensure a safe, stable business environment," the executive warned.

Jerónimo E. García De Brahi, CEO of Grupo FOREM, mentioned that uncertainty could hinder key projects.

"The challenge is to transform opportunities into reality and eliminate the uncertainty that hinders development," said García, a professor at EGADE Business School.

POSITIVES IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD

During the presentation of the report "CEO Insights 2024", Rodolfo Guzmán, managing partner for LATAM at Arthur D. Little, emphasized that, although 96% of CEOs have implemented AI in one of the areas of  their companies, just 13% have adopted a comprehensive strategy at the organizational level, showing that many companies are still in the process of transformation to fully understand and take advantage of the impact of AI.

He also revealed that 66% of CEOs worldwide are optimistic about economic growth over the next three to five years, three times last year's percentage.

According to the consultant, "Business leaders are optimistic about the future, driven by clear strategies, solid structures, and the reskilling of their workforces to make the most of artificial intelligence."

He also summarized the seven key points of the report to help CEOs achieve their growth goals in 2024, in particular the need to adapt to volatility, invest in people and capabilities, and extend AI beyond operational efficiency to generate new business opportunities.

He concluded that CEOs should also focus on fostering organizational ambidexterity, maintaining an ESG (environmental, social, and governance) approach, maximizing internal strategies, and being cautious with acquisitions.

With this event, EGADE Business School reaffirms its role as a key platform for discussing and analyzing strategic issues such as artificial intelligence, strengthening business leadership in Latin America, and facilitating the exchange of knowledge with global players.
