Millennials and centennials represent 60% of the workforce in Latin America, though many face financial challenges such as unstable jobs, low salaries, and difficulty becoming financially independent.
In episode 205 of Territorio Negocios, María Concepción del Alto, professor in the Department of Finance and Business Economics at EGADE Business School, and Melissa Treviño, personal finance expert and student in the EGADE MBA program, analyzed the financial challenges faced by these generations.
Del Alto pointed out that some challenges include thinking about “what their pension will look like, what they’ll live on in old age, and everything related to health, care, and food needs.”
She highlighted that Generation Z, being digital natives, “are taking more initiatives to increase their financial literacy” and are interested in managing healthy finances. “They already surpass millennials in terms of their savings rate,” she said.
For her part, Treviño warned about the impact of social media on personal finances. “Many financial decisions made by young people are influenced by what others are doing, such as investing in cryptocurrencies or taking risky investments.”
Both guests agreed that financial education should begin at an early age. Del Alto proposed teaching basic topics such as saving, efficient spending, and smart consumption from primary school to raise awareness from childhood.
Regarding the role of technology, Treviño mentioned that there are platforms for investing, budgeting, or taking online courses, but it’s essential to verify that they are trustworthy and regulated.
To conclude, both offered recommendations. Del Alto suggested diversifying and using platforms like Setes Directo, while Treviño advised comparing sources, validating information, and seeking tools that truly support financial goals.
