Inicia EGADE U Week con miras en Future Thinking

Today, EGADE Business School launched, at its Monterrey site, EGADE U Week, its new update program for Tecnológico de Monterrey alumni, with the first edition focusing on Future Thinking for Transformational Leadership.

Ignacio de la Vega, Dean of EGADE Business School, who offered a welcome message as an “avatar professor” thanks to holographic projection technology, indicated that permanent updating guarantees currency and relevance for any professional.

“EGADE U Week joins Tecnológico de Monterrey’s transformation in offering the education every professional needs to be competitive in an environment of exponential change,” said the Dean.

Ignacio de la Vega

In the first of the program’s three days, activities got underway with a panel on “Future of Learning”, with the participation of Diego Lainez, Global Learning and Development Manager at Metalsa, and Julien Depauw, Director of the Master in Business Management at EGADE Business School.

“I firmly believe that learning is the skill that will enable us to resonate in the future. Companies now have to view themselves as organizations that also teach, that allow their collaborators to continue with their education,” Lainez commented.

Julien Lainez

The next session was a discussion by EduTalks on the topic “Future of Work”, with the participation of Dean De la Vega and Pierre-Henri Blancher, Senior Manager of Human Capital and Leader of the Future of Work for Latin America at Deloitte México, who enumerated the disruptive factors of the future of work, including artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, robotics, jobs that are vulnerable to automation, demographic diversity and generational change.

“We’re experiencing a tsunami of data. We all generate millions of pieces of data every day through our social networks,” Blancher mentioned.

Tamara

Tamara Carleton, CEO of the Innovation Leadership Group, gave the workshop “Future Thinking: Tools & Growth Strategies”, in which she shared his Foresight Framework model, composed of five phases that guide the planning and action of innovation within organizations.

The five phases of the model, Carleton explained, are Perspective, Opportunity, Solution, Equipment and Vision, which are designed to identify and evaluate new technologies, anticipate the current and emerging needs of future customers, and address complex problems in the fastest, creative and systematic possible.

"This helps to create the culture and environment for people to work together, collaborate and think about bigger ideas, and this makes it a sustainable process," said the instructor of the Stanford University Continuous Studies program.

In addition to the workshop, Carleton offered the “Data Driven Future in Mexico” conference.

Luis Guevara

On the second day of activities, Luis Guevara, Leader of the Accenture Mexico Innovation Center, gave the “Technology Vision 2019” conference, in which he commented that the post-digital era is already breaking out and companies must be ready for what follow.

"83% of the executives we surveyed at Accenture agree that understanding consumer behavior around technology is essential to create customer loyalty; today we can customize and direct our efforts in a very specific way," said Guevara.

On the other hand, Adalberto González, Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Leader of Accenture Mexico, offered the conference “Applied innovation and disruptive business models”.

"As companies, we must learn to work with the new generations, who are the ones who understand and are shaping the technology," Gonzalez said.

Guevara and González, from Accenture Mexico, accompanied Gilberto Olavarrieta, Professor of Business Intelligence at EGADE Business School; Daniel Uriol, director of Digital Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Daniela Cruz Azcoitia, co-founder of Pulpai, in the “Digital Transformation & Learning Experience” panel.

The second day ended with the participation of Joaquín Lozano Aguirre, director of Relations with Graduates of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, who offered the conference "Global Impact of Tec Alumni".

Salvador Alva

On the third and final day, Salvador Alva, president of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, delivered the conference “A possible Mexico”, based on the book he co-wrote with businessman José Antonio Fernández, in which they propose four differentiators for the country: thriving talent, committed and capable; a great place to live, safe and full of opportunities; a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, and a business friendly ecosystem.

"There are plenty of leaders focused on problem-solving, but what is needed are inspiring leaders focused on what Mexico can be, focused on breaking paradigms," Alva said.

At the end of the event, the Design Thinking workshop was held, taught by Mario Saldaña, founding partner of Mindit, in which the attendees designed innovative proposals in teams to transform Mexico, which they presented in a team pitches session called “ Jam on Mexico's Transformation. ”

In its first edition, EGADE U Week focused on Future Thinking and how this model impacts different industries and supports the formation of leaders with a human approach capable of generating the transformation of industries and societies.

The next edition of EGADE U Week will take place in Mexico City in 2020.

Corporate Sustainability Success Cases in Latin America

Submitted by frida.mortera on Tue, 02/19/2019 - 14:48
Presentan casos de éxito de sostenibilidad corporativa en América Latina
  • In a panel following the presentation of the book Labyrinth of Sustainability, academic and business leaders analyzed success cases of leading companies, such as Nestlé and Walmart in Mexico, and corporate sustainability strategies in the region.

Presentan casos de éxito de sostenibilidad

Even though many companies want to be more sustainable, sustainability is actually an obstacle-filled labyrinth for most of them.  Learning to navigate across this complexity is one of the objectives of the new book Labyrinth of Sustainability: Green Business Lessons from Latin American Corporate Leaders, edited by Daniel C. Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at the University of Yale, which brings together a dozen case studies generated jointly by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, in the USA, EGADE Business School, in Mexico, INCAE Business School, in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and Fundación Getúlio Vargas, in Brazil. The book presentation took place during an event at EGADE Business School Mexico City and was attended by some of the authors of the cases analyzed, seven of which are signed by academic and doctoral students from the graduate business school.

For the first time in Latin America, a single book has compiled a collection of stories based on the sustainability imperative,  “the leadership imperative of our era” according to the renowned academic who coordinated this edition.  The 12 case studies  reflect diverse perspectives and key sustainability topics in the region and  describe the successes and the challenges faced by companies that operate in Latin America.

Presentan casos de éxito de sostenibilidad

In Latin America, sustainability has traditionally been seen merely as a matter of reputation. However, more and more Latin American companies have realized that incorporating sustainability into their daily strategy generates competitive advantage. “It is a way of reducing risks, lowering costs, specifically energy costs, and of generating growth in both revenues and profitability,” explained Dan Esty in his presentation, which was introduced by Dr. Ernesto Amorós, National Director of Doctoral Programs at EGADE Business School.

“We have discovered many things during our investigation, including that all types of companies, regardless of their industry or size, have sustainability components that can be incorporated into their strategy to differentiate themselves from the competition,” explained the academic, who added that sustainability cannot have a limited vision. “You have to understand that there are numerous stakeholders in the 21st century, so not only those who fight for the environment are important, but you must also take an interest in the community, local governments, consumers, your suppliers and, increasingly, investors, who are scrutinizing more and more whether companies are sustainable.”

The presentation then gave way to the panel “Corporate Sustainability in Latin America”, moderated by Dr. Luli Pesqueira, Business Liaison coordinator at WWF México, with the participation of the book’s editor, Juan Pardo, senior manager of Corporate Affairs at Nestlé México, and Juan Carlos Camargo, Sustainability deputy director at Walmart Mexico and Central America.

“One of Walmart’s ambitions was to use a 100%  clean, renewable energy supply. The case study reflects how we were able to connect with wind power project developers,” Juan Carlos Camargo explained.

“Our strategy has helped us to consolidate our leadership image in Mexico and with our shareholders, having reached the point of operating eight renewable energy projects. 90% of our stores already receive renewable energy generated in the country, allowing us to separate the growth of our emissions from the growth of our sales floor,” he added.

Juan Pardo, from Nestlé, explained the innovation of his company’s case study included in the book: “In powdered milk production, we combined two technologies to make use of evaporation from the milk dehydration process, condensing the water that comes from the milk to treat and use it up to two times in services. We no longer use an Olympic-size swimming pool of water every day.”

“We were worldwide pioneers in an example of Mexican knowhow that is now being exported.  It’s a matter of circular economy, of how we can reuse and better manage natural resources,” indicated the Nestlé manager.

Nestlé sponsored giving 100 copies of the book to the school’s MBA students, who are preparing to become transforming leaders with a sustainability focus and a commitment to businesses’ positive impact, in line with the mission of EGADE Business School to empower omni-entrepreneurial leaders, who create shared value and transform society.

Tec recognizes the impact of the SWIT model on sustainable wealth generation

Submitted by frida.mortera on Thu, 01/31/2019 - 13:37
Reconocen impacto de modelo SWIT en generación de riqueza sustentable

Is it possible to maintain the balance between the growth of industrialization and the quality of life of the population, and at the same time reduce the deterioration of natural wealth caused by the unbalanced economic growth of some regions at the expense of the dismantling of the natural capital of others?

Answering this question is the objective of the project “SWIT: Generation of sustainable wealth”, recognized as part of “Tec projects with potential to transform Mexico”, at the 49th Research and Development Conference of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Under the leadership of Dr. Carlos Scheel, emeritus professor at EGADE Business School, the project developed the SWIT (Sustainable Wealth creation based on Innovation and enabling Technologies) model, which seeks to harmoniously articulate the three great dimensions of the biosphere: economic, social (human) and environmental.

"More than a project is an initiative that puts sustainability within everyone's reach," said Dr. Scheel, accompanied by the team of researchers, professors, students and various actors in society, before receiving recognition from the hands of David Garza, Rector of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Among those involved in the project are Andrea Cantú Garza, a student of the Doctorate in Administrative Sciences of EGADE Business School, and another graduate of the same program, Dr. Eduardo Aguiñaga Maldonado, leader of Circular Economy of Heineken Mexico.

Some relevant data and results of the project are:

  • 23 national and international projects have been carried out
  • 4 countries have put the SWIT concept into operation
  • 15 scientific articles published in journals Q1 and Q2
  • 9 short courses taught
  • 6 books published
  • 8 book chapters
  • SWIT dissemination website: www.swit.mx
  • 4 researchers in the project
  • 27 students have worked on the project
  • Linking with 11 foreign universities
  • 14 theses (11 master's and 3 PhD)

Also, for the implementation of the SWIT model, the DiSC Innovation Platform (Disruptive, Systemic and Circular Innovation) was designed, which aims to articulate the synergy between all the constituents of the three subsystems, with the intention of achieving a shared prosperity for all.

All of the above is about generating a holistic development of wealth for a region through projects that are environmentally resilient (recoverable), reversible and durable, as well as socially responsible, inclusive and equitable, and that are finally economically viable and competitive. That is, wealth that can be distributed among all the participants of a region.

More details in this video presented during the “Tec projects with potential to transform Mexico” ceremony of the 49th Research and Development Congress.
