With Innovation, Mexico Could Be the ‘Tiger of Emerging Economies,’ José Varela

Submitted by egade on Sat, 08/31/2019 - 09:05
Con innovación, México puede ser el ‘tigre de las economías emergentes’: José Varela

By José Ángel de la Paz

“Mexico could be the ‘tiger of emerging economies’ over the next 25 years, if leaders like you dare to innovate,” said José Varela, CEO of 3M Mexico, during the closing ceremony of the 2019 EGADE National MBA Conference.

Varela offered the keynote speech "The science behind innovation" to more than 350 MBA students from the EGADE Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Querétaro sites.

The executive from the company that invented products such as masking tape, Scotch Tape and Post-it Notes said that science is the principal source of innovation.

“At 3M, we are fully aware of the importance of science and use it every day to improve people's lives. But, what do people across the globe think of science? Do they understand the importance and impact of science in their lives in the same way as we do?” he asked.

Varela told the attendees that, according to the report “The Global State of Science (SoSI)”, Mexicans are more curious about than indifferent to science.

"For example, 54% of Mexicans, compared to just 29% of the Chinese population, believe that science is the solution to the world’s major problems," he said.

Nevertheless,  he added that even though Mexicans are optimistic about the future of science and its potential to solve global challenges, hold  STEM careers in high regard and are enthusiastic about scientific advancements, they feel that the country is falling behind.

"Despite the high expectations, people are extremely skeptical when it comes to science," he said.

Varela concluded that in order to prevent Mexico’s growth from grinding to a halt, innovation should be fostered through investments in science and technology, with the collaboration of companies, the government and other sectors, such as institutions of higher education.

Companies committed to creating shared value and leadership in an era characterized by disruption and constant change were the topics addressed on the first day of the 2019 National EGADE MBA Conference, in Monterrey.

Fausto Costa, CEO of Nestlé México, in the conference “Nestlé, making a difference in Mexican society”, explained that the multinational’s purpose is to improve life and contribute to a healthier future, by creating shared value.

“Corporate sustainability is a strategic pillar of business that makes it possible to satisfy different needs, the company’s own and of its diverse audiences, and is fundamental to protecting and maintaining the natural resources that will be necessary in the future for the development of society.

“Nestlé’s commitment for 2025 is to have recyclable or reusable packaging. Moreover, in terms of a circular economy, we need to advance together with different industries so that these inputs can be reused,” Costa stated.

In the conference “Leading the future”, Raquel Hernández, head of Talent Strategy at Mercer México, assured that employment of the future is already a reality, and mentioned five trends valued by collaborators and that leaders need to assimilate: fast-paced change, purpose-driven work, permanent flexibility for work-life balance, talent platform for those who want to grow and learn, and digital collaborators from the inside out.

“The new leader needs to have mind to provide a clear purpose, direction and strategy; heart to understand, work with others and develop them; and courage to do what is right, based on clear values.

“If you focus on people, these people will take care of the objectives. By nature, people seek accomplishments and success. Find people who are passionate about what they do,” said Hernández.
