The Class of June 2023 of EGADE Business School, Guadalajara site, graduated in a joint ceremony with bachelor’s graduates from the School of Business of Tecnológico Monterrey at Campus Guadalajara.

The graduation took place on June 28 in the campus Sports Dome and was broadcast live on live.tec.mx.

A group of 22 EGADE Business School students graduated from the EGADE MBA graduate program, including José Miguel Santa Ana Velasco, who was awarded summa cum laude and had the highest grade average of his generation.

The new EGADE alumnae and alumni were called one by one to the podium to receive their diplomas and greet the guest of honor and guest speaker, José Medina Mora, founder and chair of the board of CompuSoluciones; Marisa Lazo Covera, chair of the board of Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara; Claudia Félix Sandoval, vice-president of the Western Region of Tecnológico de Monterrey and general director of Campus Guadalajara; and Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School.

Members of the faculty who also attended the ceremony were Ricardo Úbeda, associate academic dean of EGADE Business School; Raúl Montalvo, director of EGADE Business School Guadalajara site; and Pedro Carreón, EGADE MBA program director in Guadalajara.

In his message, Medina Mora invited the graduates to be socially responsible individuals who act ethically, with a focus on people, environmental protection, and community outreach.

"It’s not the future that’s in your hands, but the present and Mexico needs you," the guest speaker declared.

Félix Sandoval brought the ceremony to a close by leading the new bachelor’s and master’s graduates in taking the pledge.

Afterward, the new EGADE alumnae and alumni enjoyed a cocktail networking in the EIAD Building at Campus Guadalajara.

Goal Accomplished! EGADE Monterrey Celebrates Graduation

The Class of June 2023 of EGADE Business School in Monterrey, together with the EGADE MBAOnline and Master in Finance Online programs, celebrated the culmination of their graduate studies in a ceremony held at this site.

The graduation ceremony took place on June 24 and was broadcast through the live.tec.mx site and EGADE Business School’s Facebook and LinkedIn accounts.

On this occasion, 152 master’s degrees and 4 doctorates were awarded to graduates from different cities in Mexico, and from another nine countries (China, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, New Zealand, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela).

Per program, there were 102 graduates from the EGADE MBA and EGADE MBAOnline; 8 from the EGADE – UNC Charlotte MBA in Global Business & Strategy; 41 from the Master in Finance and Master in Finance Online; 1 from the Master in Business Analytics; and 4 from the Ph.D. in Administrative Sciences.

Summa cum laude was awarded to the master’s degree graduates with the highest grade average in their respective programs. This select group was comprised of:

  • Samantha Brandi González, EGADE MBA.
  • María Guadalupe Menéndez Santillán, EGADE MBAOnline, who also obtained the highest average of her generation.
  • Luis Humberto Flores Trejo, EGADE – UNC Charlotte MBA in Global Business & Strategy.

The graduation in Monterrey was presided over by Azeneth Ferrero, corporate director of Human Resources at Cemex; Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School; Ricardo Úbeda, associate academic dean of EGADE Business School; and Ana María Zermeño, director of Operations and Academic Experience at EGADE Business School.

In her message to the graduates as guest speaker, Ferrero reflected on how their degree represents opportunities, hope, and new chapters in their lives.

Representing her generation, Rhianon Ann Berry, an EGADE MBA graduate, delivered an emotive message highlighting her experience of studying a graduate degree at EGADE Business School and of forming part of its extraordinary community.

“As a New Zealand trade commissioner of Mexico, the tools and contacts this MBA has given me are invaluable for continuing to grow in my professional career. Moreover, by expanding my networking I have been able to forge inspiring friendships that I am sure will last for many years.

“When we decide to embark on the path of a master's degree, our personal motivations can vary enormously. For me, this choice represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, a journey that has involved significant sacrifices for both me and my family. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize my fellow graduates and their families for all their hard work and for this incredible achievement we have accomplished together,” Berry said.

Before leading the students in taking the pledge, Arredondo urged the new EGADE alumni and alumnae to be curious, ingenious, and adventurous in order to rise to the challenges they will face.

EGADE hosts BALAS 2023 Annual Conference; researchers discuss deglobalization with views from Latin America

More than 150 scholars, researchers, and doctoral students participated in the BALAS 2023 Annual Conference “Facing Deglobalization: Views from and for Latin America”.

This year, EGADE Business School hosted the event of the Business Association for Latin American Studies (BALAS), held from June 20 to 23, at the Mexico City Campus of Tecnológico de Monterrey.

In this edition, participants explored, in particular, the phenomenon of deglobalization and its impact on business, as well as solutions focused on Latin America.

Through the in-person and remote presentation of a total of 86 papers and cases by 156 authors from 26 countries, the tracks discussed also included management history and sustainable business.

The opening session was led by Horacio Arredondo, dean of EGADE Business School; Ricardo Buitrago, research professor at EGADE Business School and chair of the BALAS 2023 Annual Conference; and Urbi Garay, president of BALAS.

Arredondo commented that the 2023 edition of the BALAS Annual Conference made it possible to underscore the importance of business research in the face of deglobalization.

“As we navigate these challenging times, it has become increasingly clear that business research plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable development in Latin America and its impact on the world,” he stressed in his welcome message.

The program included a doctoral colloquium, plenary sessions, parallel sessions for paper presentations, panels, and networking activities.

Dionne Nickerson, professor at Kelley Business School, and Rajiv Maher, professor at EGADE Business School, talked about "Sustainable Business” in a plenary moderated by Christiane Molina, EGADE Business School professor and Research director of Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Conscious Enterprise Center.

In addition, Raúl Montalvo, director of EGADE Business School’s Guadalajara site, moderated the session “Meet the Editors,” with the participation of Niels Ketelhöhn, representative of CLADEA BALAS Case Consortium (CBCC); Jeffrey Muldoon, editor of the Journal of Management History; Nestor Salcedo, editor of the Journal of Economics, Finance and Administrative Science; and Ernesto Amorós, associate dean of Faculty at EGADE Business School and editor of Management Research.

Global Network Week at EGADE with a focus on conscious enterprises

Twenty-eight students from the Global Network for Advanced Management business schools meet at EGADE Santa Fe headquarters.

EGADE Business School of the Tecnológico de Monterrey hosted the module "Building and Leading Conscious Enterprises" within the international program Global Network Week for EMBA Students in its June 2023 edition.

At its Santa Fe site in Mexico City, EGADE Business School brought together a group of 28 students representing various nationalities and nine business schools members of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM):

  • EGADE Business School (Mexico)
  • FGV EAESP (Brazil)
  • Haas School of Business (USA)
  • IE Business School (Spain)
  • Said Business School (United Kingdom)

Within the module designed by EGADE Business School, the participants developed an understanding of the tenets of conscious capitalism, balancing a theoretical and practical perspective to analyze the impact of these practices on the possibility of transforming a conventional business into a conscious one.

The activities took place from June 12 to 16 and included academic sessions, cultural-business visits, and networking.

Ernesto Amorós, Associate Dean of the Faculty at EGADE Business School, welcomed the participants.

The sessions were taught by Raj Sisodia, FEMSA Distinguished University Professor of Conscious Enterprise and president of the Center for Conscious Companies at Tecnológico de Monterrey, and professors Luis Gerardo GonzálezRajiv MaherMayte Barba, and Franciso A. Espinoza.

As a guest speaker, there was the participation of Juan Muldoon, global director of People of Grupo Bimbo.

In other activities, the participants visited the Archaeological Zone of Teotihuacán, the National Museum of Anthropology, the Franz Mayer Museum, where they toured the "Carla Fernández Casa de Moda" exhibition, and KidZania.

They also enjoyed a Pacari chocolate tasting.

AROUND THE WORLD

Simultaneously within the Global Network Week for EMBA Students in June 2023, 63 EGADE Business School students participated in 18 modules taught by different GNAM business schools, including the one offered at EGADE Santa Fe.

The EGADE Business School students who participated in these modules study the EGADE MBAEGADE Full-Time MBA, and EGADE - UNC Charlotte MBA in Global Business & Strategy programs.

These talented athletes prove that academic success and athletic prowess can go hand in hand.

Alejandra Roviraa Master in Business Management student at EGADE Business School, was selected to form part of the Mexican national 3x3 Basketball team. Her dedication and skills on the court as a player for Borregos Monterrey and her recent incorporation into the local team, Fuerza Regia Women, earned her this opportunity to represent her country.

Moreover, Greta Espinoza, a graduate of the Master in Business Management, was selected to join the Mexican Soccer team. Her passion for this sport and the championships she has won with the professional side Tigres Women led her to excel in this discipline and become an inspiration on the field of play.

EGADE Professor Addresses Digital Impact at the 2023 PRME Global Forum in NYC

Christiane Molina highlighted the importance of leveraging digital platforms to advance responsible management education and foster sustainable development.

Christiane Molina, professor of the Strategy and Leadership Department at EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey, presented the opening remarks on digital impact discussion sessions at the 2023 PRME Global Forum in New York City.

As a member of the PRME Global Chapter Council, Molina spoke of the importance of leveraging digital platforms to promote responsible management education and encourage sustainable development.

The PRME Global Forum, held on June 13-14 and hosted by Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business, was a centerpiece for Responsible Management Education Week. With an exceptional lineup of purpose-driven speakers and a dynamic program, the forum aimed to drive the global debate on how business education can contribute to the sustainable development agenda.

Professor Molina initiated her remarks by asking a thought-provoking question: "Connecting for digital impact? What does it mean?" 

She emphasized that the essence of digital impact lies in the relationships formed through shared emotions, interests, and concerns. 

While technology remains a vital component, she argued that "digital" had acquired a new meaning since 2020, when the pandemic compelled the world to transition to a digital-centric lifestyle

Molina encouraged the audience to acknowledge the tremendous efforts made during that period and recognize the ongoing systemic transformation of education.

Molina further highlighted the role of digital platforms in democratizing access to quality knowledge and education. 

She emphasized the importance of infusing the human touch into this digital revolution, where empathy plays a central role. 

Also, she stressed the significance of building communities that enable scholars to communicate, share experiences and challenges, and ultimately learn and inspire one another. 

She urged the audience to leverage the comfort they have gained with digital tools to seize the opportunities presented by the digital world and scale their impact.

The 2023 PRME Global Forum provided an opportunity to reflect on PRME's growth over the past year and centered its discussions on key themes such as pedagogy, climate, digital, and leadership. It was an especially significant event, marking the first in-person forum since 2017.

Professor Christiane Molina's participation in the PRME Global Forum exemplified the commitment of EGADE Business School and its faculty members to driving responsible management education and fostering sustainable development.

Electrification of public transport buses would mitigate 40.5 thousand tons of CO2 per year in Mexico City, study by EGADE and VEMO concludes

EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey and VEMO, a Mexican firm that seeks to accelerate clean mobility in Latin America, published an analysis of the potential impact of the electrification of public transport in Mexico City, in order to estimate the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by replacing all internal combustion buses with electric buses.

The study, “Electromobility in Mexico: a proposal for mitigating emissions and its impact on health,” concluded that the electrification of public transport buses would mitigate 40.5 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, equivalent to the absorption of CO2 by 1.9 million adult trees over the same period of time, as well as 364 tons of toxic pollutants, mainly nitrogen oxides (NOx).

At present, the fact of the matter is that transport emissions are still rising. Given the high dependence on fossil fuels, transport represents 65% of GHG emissions in cities. Regarding pollution emissions that affect air quality, 75% of particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) comes from HGVs and buses, while transport is responsible for 88% of NOx, (Carbon Trust, 2018).

To estimate the reduction in emissions from public transport when using electric buses instead of internal combustion buses, the analysis followed a methodology that considered the specific consumption of both technologies and the emission factor of Mexico’s national electricity system.

According to the authors, the study shows that, as the world pursues the vision of a more environmentally responsible decarbonized transport sector that protects people’s well-being, the contribution of electric vehicles will undoubtedly be significant.

The analysis also addressed four central ideas regarding electric vehicles:

  1. Electric vehicles impact climate change by reducing GHG emissions; the economy by protecting productivity and reducing public health costs; and health by reducing toxic pollutants.
     
  2. Considering their entire useful life (from the extraction of raw materials to their final disposal), electric vehicles comprise a climate change mitigation measure since they have a lower carbon footprint, particularly when they are used intensively and travel numerous kilometers.
     
  3. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions increases when there is a greater penetration of clean energies in the energy matrix of the region where the vehicle is recharged.
     
  4. The electrification of public transport could play a key role in the evolution of the electric vehicle industry.

On this topic, Osmar Zavaleta Vázquez, professor from the Department of Business Finance and Economics at EGADE Business School and co-author of the study, commented:

“Taking measures to reduce the pollution generated by transport is vital in order to improve air quality and reduce the emissions that contribute to global warming nationwide. There is no single solution to this problem. However, all the actions we undertake to reduce the need to get around in vehicles, be they gasoline or electric, will positively impact the reduction of polluting emissions.”

For her part, Yolanda Villegas González, legal director of Compliance and Institutional Relations at VEMO and coauthor of the analysis, pointed out that:

“Climate change is approached from different perspectives, especially in the field of mobility. Several options are available to promote electric vehicles and their positive environmental impact and reduce costs. In addition, joint efforts are being carried out with companies and organizations that are promoting electromobility. These actions seek to reach a broader public and generate momentum to transition towards a clean and sustainable transport system that meets the population's needs.”

The study’s other authors are Ana Cecilia Garza Cortez, graduate of the Specialization in Energy Management, EGADE Business School; Víctor Humberto Gutiérrez Campos, national leader for Campus Sustainability at Tecnológico de Monterrey; and Andrea Álvarez Rocha, ESG leader at VEMO.

EGADE Alumni Included on the 2023 Expansión 41+1 LGBT+ in Business List

An alumna and two alumni of EGADE Business School have been recognized in the fifth edition of the list, compiled in conjunction with ADIL and Love4All.

Expansión magazine published, for the fifth year, its 41+1 LGBT+ in Business list, which, in its 2023 version, distinguishes an alumna and two alumni of EGADE Business School - Tecnológico de Monterrey.

The list, compiled in conjunction with ADIL and Love4All, seeks to recognize people in leadership positions in Mexico who, from within and outside their position, help and inspire the LGBT+ population to live freely, visibly and successfully, thereby fostering a true environment of diversity and inclusion.  

“[The protagonists of these pages] reflect on how they have aligned their professional and personal paths in companies, and how they pressure them to genuinely get involved in the cause,” the publication says.

The EGADE Alumna and Alumni on the list are:

  • Cecilia Medina (GBS’17)
    IT Director for Digital Business Services Americas at British American Tobacco.

Cecilia is a founding member of the group for BAT LGBT+ employees in Mexico, Central America Central, the Caribbean, and Canada, and diversity leader in these same regions. Thanks to her involvement, BAT has become one of the first companies to participate in Pride Connection in Monterrey, and BAT México was the first of the group’s companies to participate openly in a pride parade. She was also the contact with HRC to certify the company as one of the best LGBT-friendly places to work, a certification it has achieved for three years running.

  • Fernando Iglesias (GBS’21)
    Contract Manager and Personal Data Protection Officer for Latin America at Carrier

Fernando Iglesias is President of ERG Pride at the global level. He has transformed organizational culture to drive knowledge and the destigmatization of LGBTQ+ people. He has also implemented sexual orientation and gender identity non-discrimination clauses, creating an inclusive environment in the company. His leadership has left a lasting mark on promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.

    ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​General Talent and Culture Coordinator at Grupo Proeza

Miguel Ángel has constantly sought to promote an inclusive and empowering environment as the first openly gay executive in the 66-year history of Grupo Proeza. In his position, he can now be seen just as he is, without fear and with the firm intention of building a better world for the members of the LGBTQ+ community.
