Social Innovation and Sustainability

The Strategically-Focused Research Group in Social Innovation and Sustainability seeks to bring business and society into alignment by developing business models to solve social and environmental problems in Latin America.

First, we test known business models for solving social problems in order to understand the context and institutions of Latin America and validate these business models in order to determine whether they solve social problems in Latin America (ex., microfinance, base of the pyramid models, corporate social responsibility, human resources management and stakeholder management). Second, we seek to understand the mechanisms of business models that affect social problems. We ask what factors limit effectiveness of current business models? What factors improve effectiveness of current business models? Third, we seek to develop new business models for Latin America by establishing their validity and ability to solve environmental and social problems in the region.

Research Areas

  • Circular economy
  • Corporate social responsibility
  • Human resources management in a changing social and environmental context
  • Services at the base of the pyramid
  • Social enterprise and social entrepreneurship
  • Sustainable wealth creation through innovation and enabling technology

  • financial markets (e.g., portfolio optimization, risk management, derivatives)
  • interaction of monetary and fiscal policy with the real economy (e.g., the way in which macroeconomic forces shape the economy and affect regions, industries and companies)
  • behavioral economics and finance
  • and emerging financial technologies (e.g., fintech, blockchain, AI, business analytics, etc.)

Strategy and Management of Organizations in Emerging Economies

Our research group focuses on the strategies, structures, and management processes that help organizations become more competitive and serve their stakeholders better, while maintaining their long-term viability and contributing to the social and environmental well-being of the places where they operate.

The point of departure for our work are the institutional and cultural conditions of the emerging economies of Latin America and elsewhere, in which organizations formulate and implement their strategies through their specific business models and ways to enhance competitiveness. On a more fine-grained level, our research has addressed the topics of dynamic capabilities, knowledge management, and practice transfer processes. Members of our research group have also directed their attention to the bottom of the pyramid and practices of micro-finance.

From a different vantage point, the organizations that we deal with exist in a highly globalized environment, which is the basis for our second mayor research focus of International Management. Our research has dealt with global strategy, internationalization processes, multiculturalism within organizations, international human resource management, and global leadership.

Finally, some of our members have published advances in management education for both university students and executives, especially in Finance and International Management.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

At the end of the decade of seventies, Tecnológico de Monterrey considered that its graduates should have an entrepreneurial attitude and not only have as a goal to occupy positions in established companies. For this, it was necessary to give the students a special training that not only introduced them to the path of entrepreneurship, but also gave them the necessary tools to travel on that path. This is how the Programa Empresario (business-owners program) began in 1978, through a small group of professors and entrepreneurs who guided a group of students in the process of creating a company. This program was later transformed into the Programa Emprendedor (Entrepreneurship Program). Thanks to this program, various support projects have been triggered that continue to promote the entrepreneurial spirit of the Tec de Monterrey community, generating one of the most dynamic and complete university entrepreneurship ecosystems in Latin America and even the world.

Since its inception, entrepreneurship has become part of the Institution's DNA. Tec was founded by entrepreneurs. Many young students who, upon graduation, became successful entrepreneurs (41% of graduates have started at least one company) that they have generated 2.8 million jobs and innovated in a large number of areas according to the “Economic Impact Study of Tec de Monterrey Graduates in the World” (QS, 2018).

Our goal like research group, is to enhance and disseminate research in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation as fundamental tools to strengthen the economic and social development putting focus in these specific research lines:

  1. Entrepreneurship ecosystems: its aim is the systematic study of the economic and social implications of creating new firms and the relevant actors and conditions to enhance the entrepreneurship activities. Within this topic, the context and characteristics of entrepreneurship will be analyzed at its three levels: individual, regional and national.
  2. Social entrepreneurship: Its objective is the study of processes around business that are created for greater social and environmentally goals and not just the pursuit of profits. This includes the notion of conscious entrepreneurship and the relationship of entrepreneurial activities that have social impact.
  3. Entrepreneurship education: Its objective is to analyze the processes of teaching entrepreneurship from a management perspective. Consequently, it seeks to have a better understanding of the impact of entrepreneurship courses in higher education, the mechanisms that generate entrepreneurship and career development, and the study of entrepreneurial motivations and cultural contexts.
  4. Corporate entrepreneurship: Its objective is to analyze who innovation processes within established organizations generate new business opportunities and the subsequent corporate venture creation. This topic includes the study of entrepreneurship culture inside the organization, strategy for innovation and mechanisms to implement entrepreneurship programs or projects including corporate venture capital.

Consumer Behavior and Conscious Marketing

The research group with a strategic approach, GIEE, now known as “Consumer Behavior and Conscious Marketing”, was born from the merger of three research chairs at Tec de Monterrey. On one hand, the research chair on Marketing and Sustainable Development advanced in Campus Toluca and coordinated by Dra. Lorena Carrete with the participation of Dra. Pilar Arroyo and Mrs. Sara Isabel García López. On the other hand, the research chair Glocalization: Understanding the Latino Consumer, forming an important tradition at Campus Monterrey, under the direction of Dra. Raquel Castaño with the relevant participation of Dra. Claudia Quintanilla. Finally, the research chair Consumer, Brand, and Competitiveness, in Mexico City, under the coordination of Dr. Jorge Vera Martínez and the outstanding contributions of Dra. Andrea Trujillo, Dr. Rajagopal, and Dr. Edgar Centeno.

Although at the beginning, this GIEE was named “Consumer Behavior and Value Creation”, in an effort to give it a more precise and transcendent approach, the research lines were merged and reoriented until reaching the name it now holds. Currently, the research efforts in this GIEE, are inspired by the following thought: “Conscious consumer behavior and conscious marketing strategies will not only produce more social and ecological value, but also greater long-term financial performance for organizations”.

Branding and consumer perceptions. The brand has played a leading role in marketing activity for the past 30 years. The brand is considered the main vehicle to communicate and manage consumer benefits of products and services. In this research line, studies carried out are about the effects of brand perceptions on customer behavior. Here variables such as performance of the product/service, perceived value, consumer-brand identification, purchasing patterns, and brand performance are analyzed. Our studies emphasize responsible and sustainable use of brands and marketing strategies.

Digital marketing and diffusion of innovations. In accordance with the priority topics of the Business School of Tecnológico de Monterrey related to entrepreneurship, innovation, and the use of technology, this line of research studies the development of business in the digital environment as well as the consumer adaptation to that environment. Here, the effects of innovative technologies and products on consumers' behavioral changes, such as adoption processes and cultural changes are studied. Relevant topics here are product adoption profiles, e-commerce channels, and technological impacts.

Responsible consumption decisions and social welfare. Humanity is moving towards a sustainable society, and today more than ever, the issue of responsible consumption and behaviors acquires strategic importance. Responsible consumption derives from the recognition of the repercussions that superfluous, excessive, or harmful consumption, both personal and collective, have on the balance between economic, environmental, and social well-being. For this reason, and in accordance with the Business School's approach towards promoting shared values and conscious businesses, this research line focuses on identifying the determinants of sustainable and healthy behavior that can lead to delineating interventions, policies, educational effort, and social marketing campaigns to promote personal and social well-being.
