Corporate governance in Mexico is at a decisive stage. The professionalization of boards, transparency, accountability, and technological adoption are guiding companies toward a new era of sustainability and competitiveness.

In episode 221 of Territorio Negocios, hosted by Eva María Guerra, Associate Academic Dean at EGADE Business School of Tecnológico de Monterrey, Ricardo Murcio, leader of the Corporate Governance Initiative at EGADE Business School, participated in the discussion.

Tecnológico de Monterrey, since its origin, has had a board of trustees and is an institution that believes in corporate governance,” explained Murcio. “Since 2014, through the Board Member Training Program, a culture around the topic has been built and strengthened.”

The expert highlighted that the value of public companies in Mexico represents only 22% of GDP, compared to 170% in the United States and 100% in India. This gap, he noted, presents an opportunity to strengthen boards' strategic roles.

On this point, Murcio emphasized that “the board is not there to solve day-to-day problems. The board is there to look at the long term,” and stressed that “thinking together about a problem produces better and deeper solution alternatives.”

He also pointed out that professional board members must understand regulations, finance, indicators, and talent, and adapt to trends such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and process automation.

Murcio mentioned that boards must include people who understand and are trained in these areas and invited the audience to read EGADE's “Transforming Corporate Governance in Mexico” report.
