Professors and researchers from EGADE Business School and the Business Center of Tecnológico de Monterrey developed a project comparing the cost of a dignified life with the average income in Mexico.

In this new episode of Territorio Negocios, Christiane Molina, research professor at EGADE Business School, and Francisco Santini, Director of Ripipsa, spoke with Eva Guerra, Academic Associate Dean of the School, about the findings and the responsibility of companies as generators of employment and wealth.

The project indicated that the country’s average salary is around $8,500 Mexican pesos, while living in dignified conditions costs approximately $24,000.

Among the main characteristics considered for the study, Molina highlighted the particular emphasis on the quality of education and healthcare, “which suddenly is something taken for granted in more developed countries.”

Santini mentioned other factors considered, such as the food basket, rent or mortgage, and transportation. In the study conducted up to 2024, it was concluded that a family of four, with two contributors, “needs $7,500 a month just for food.”

Other indicators showed that in medium-sized cities like Chihuahua, families spend about “$2,500 on a house mortgage” and “$1,900 on transportation not necessarily of high quality.” “These families spend more on cell phones than on water or electricity,” said the director.

To develop this analysis, Molina stated that international methodologies were implemented and adapted to the needs of each city, and mentioned that the private sector should create salary plans that allow employees to live in dignified conditions: “They should be receiving around $13,400 monthly, net.”

“We first need to make business owners aware, know how many are the lowest paid, and from there create a plan,” added Santini.
