Mexican banking is facing a crucial moment, marked by technological disruptionsregulatory challenges, and an urgent need for greater financial inclusion.

In this episode of Territorio Negocios, Luis Hernández, professor at the Department of Finance and Business Economics at EGADE Business School del Tecnológico de Monterrey, and José Antonio Quesada, president of the National Association of Independent Professional Directors (CNCPIE by its Spanish initials) and author of the book Banking Regulation 2025, shared their insights.

The episode was hosted by Alicia Galindo, Director of the Master in Finance at EGADE Business School.

“Money, so to speak, is no longer in the banks; it is in fund managers,” said Hernández, highlighting the growing relevance of players such as BlackRock compared to traditional banking, with a difference of 2.1 billion dollars in their balance sheets.

The professor also emphasized that, after the subprime crisis and cases such as Silicon Valley Bank, regulators have focused on increasing capital requirements, which has reduced banks’ profitability.

For his part, Quesada highlighted that Mexico has made progress in financial regulation. “The 2018 Fintech Law was the first to be enacted in Latin America and had a very well-defined framework regarding crowdfunding, wallets, and regulatory sandboxes,” he stated.

Quesada added that there are still limitations in the implementation of digital payments: “We have not incentivized these tools as in other countries, and there is cultural resistance to giving up cash.”

Regarding future trends, Hernández warned that “we will not only have fintechs competing with banks, but also fintechs complementing them and adjusting to business models.”

Finally, Galindo highlighted the importance of strengthening financial inclusion, noting that more than half of the population continues to use informal saving methods, which opens significant opportunities for the sector.
