Dr. José M. Saiz Álvarez is a renowned researcher and educator at both EGADE Business School and the “Eugenio Garza Lagüera” Entrepreneurship Institute. Learn more about his research background.
1. Research areas
Following the UNESCO codes, I have two main research areas: Socioeconomic Development (code 630706), which encompasses Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise, and International Economy: European Area (code 531091). Both contribute not only to the advancement of science, thanks to the theoretical developments I have included in publications, but also the social and economic change needed in emerging countries, such as Mexico.
2. Research focus
I always try to ensure that my research work will have a practical application, which is why it is mostly published in academic books rather than research papers. An example of this practicality is the book Business Strategies and Advanced Techniques for Entrepreneurship 4.0 (IGI Global, 2018), which provides a series of practical tools to help businesses grow their efficiency and productivity, resulting in a greater business benefit.
3. Impact on society
I have the ethical and moral obligation to give back to society at least part of what I have received. With this social mortgage in mind, a large part of my research focuses on social change and economic development. This sparked my interest in researching entrepreneurship and family enterprise and, in this regard, both EGADE Business School and Tecnológico de Monterrey have a key role to fulfill.
4. Research strategy
As a School, we are positioned first in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 14th in the top 25 for entrepreneurship in North American universities, according to The Princeton Review ranking. This progress has been made possible by the team of researchers who work in conjunction to become global leaders in this field and generate an entrepreneurship model that is better adapted to the socioeconomic reality of Latin America and the Caribbean.
5. Main contribution to science
I would highlight the article I wrote with Alicia Coduras and Jesús Ruiz, “Measuring readiness for entrepreneurship: An information tool proposal” (Journal of Innovation & Knowledge, 2016). For the first time in the literature on entrepreneurship, we proposed a new tool to measure readiness for entrepreneurship. As a result, it has been cited by authors from four continents in journals edited by world-class publishers.
6. Main recognitions
National accreditation in Spain from ANECA; external research project evaluator at the invitation of the Office of the Vice Rector of Pontificia Universidad Católica in Peru; member of the Academic Consulting Commission for the Postgraduate System of Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil in Ecuador; member of the National System of Researchers in Mexico; Diploma of Recognition from the House of Representatives of the Capitol of the Free Associated State of Puerto Rico; included in Who’s Who in the World; admitted to the Noble Chapter of Ferdinand VI with the concession of a cross of merit.
