Ten students from the Master in Finance at EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey put their strategies to the test in the Mexican equity market during the 2026 edition of the BBVA-EGADE Fund Clinic, one of the program's signature learning experiences.
Organized into two teams, one in Monterrey and one in Santa Fe, the students managed MXN 32 million (MXN 16 million per team) and presented their results to specialists from BBVA Asset Management Mexico.
The experience ran from April through August and concluded on September 7 with a final presentation at BBVA in Mexico City.
The Clinic challenges students to manage investments using real funds: formulate a strategy, defend it before specialists, execute it, and take responsibility for the results. It also gives them the opportunity to test their knowledge and investment judgment against real market demands.
Two teams, MXN 32 million under management
The Santa Fe team included Alma Lizbeth Rosas Landa Jiménez, Jesús Emmanuel Lozano Vergara, Héctor Alan Villalobos Ramírez, Luis Daniel Muñoz Del Ángel, and Miguel Eduardo Vázquez Valdés, with academic guidance from professors Igor Rivera and Gerardo Salazar.

The Monterrey team included Rafael de Jesús Cervantes Varela, Eduardo Ayala Saldaña, José Pablo Ortega Salazar, Franco Manuel Flores Mendoza, and Ana Sofía Garza de Santiago, with professors Jorge Velarde and Ignacio Arriaga providing academic guidance.

The teams were responsible for financial analysis, portfolio management, trade execution, and risk monitoring. Their strategies were presented to and approved by BBVA, and performance was measured against a reference index (benchmark) defined by the bank.
Velarde explained that the Clinic replicates a professional investment process: teams build a strategy, submit it for approval, and then make decisions using real funds under predefined performance objectives.
Rivera emphasized that the challenge covers the full management cycle, from strategy design to portfolio monitoring and communicating results.
Also taking part in the final presentation were Alberto Méndez, director of the Online Master in Finance; Alicia Galindo, director of the Master in Finance in Monterrey; and Edgardo Cayón, director of the Master in Finance in Santa Fe.
Putting an investment thesis to the test
For Miguel Eduardo Vázquez Valdés, a student on the Santa Fe team, one of the most valuable aspects of the Clinic was “experiencing the investment process from beginning to end and understanding how a thesis is tested against market dynamics,” as he shared in a LinkedIn post.
He also highlighted the value of presenting and defending the team's strategy before BBVA Asset Management professionals, an experience that strengthened his interest in investment analysis, strategy, and portfolio management.
The BBVA-EGADE Fund Clinic requires students to integrate knowledge from different areas of finance to make decisions in a real market environment. Participants interpret economic information, evaluate companies and sectors, build scenarios, and adjust their strategies as market conditions evolve.
The process is supported by EGADE professors with experience in financial markets, as well as executives and specialists from BBVA Asset Management Mexico. Their participation allows teams to test their assumptions against industry criteria and deepen their assessment of risk, decision quality, and communication of results.

Since operations began in 1999, the fund linked to the BBVA-EGADE Fund Clinic has accumulated assets that reached nearly MXN 110 million by the end of the 2026 edition.
EGADE Business School's Master in Finance, offered in Monterrey, Santa Fe, and online, was recognized in the QS Business Master's Rankings: Finance 2027 as the No. 1 program in Mexico and Latin America in its field for the tenth consecutive year. It also ranked No. 48 globally overall and No. 40 globally in the Employability indicator.
As one of the signature experiences of EGADE Business School's Master in Finance, the BBVA-EGADE Fund Clinic provides a setting where academic knowledge and professional experience come together in investment decisions with real consequences. Its learning value lies not only in managing funds, but also in the ability to substantiate a strategy, submit it to evaluation, and respond to market conditions.
