Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal (MA’69), Honorary Lifetime Chairman of the Board of Directors at Becle, has left a profound mark on the business landscape in Mexico. His transformational leadership transformed the José Cuervo brand into a global symbol of innovation, tradition, and prestige—placing Mexican tequila on the world stage and establishing him as one of the greatest advocates for its denomination of origin.

A proud graduate of Tecnológico de Monterrey, Juan Francisco studied at the institution from high school through his undergraduate degree in Public Accounting, and later earned his Master in Administration from EGADE Business School.

“It is an honor to have studied at Tec, an excellent institution I’ve always been proud to be part of, where I made great friends and have wonderful memories,” he expressed when receiving the EXATEC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

SHAPING A GLOBAL LEGACY

His career at José Cuervo began in 1964. After holding key positions in operations, finance, sales, marketing, and international affairs, he was appointed Vice President, and in 1972, became Chairman of the Board.

Since then, his strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit have transformed the family-owned company into a global conglomerate. Today, Becle, the corporate group behind José Cuervo, leads the global tequila industry, with a presence in over 85 countries and a portfolio of more than 30 beverage brands across various categories.

His leadership also had a transformative impact on Tequila, Jalisco, where he promoted local infrastructure, tourism, and economic development. He was instrumental in the town being named a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) and in having the agave landscape designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

PHILANTHROPY AND SOCIAL VISION

Beyond business success, Juan Francisco has shown an unwavering commitment to education, culture, sports, healthcare, and sustainable development. Through the Beckmann and Jose Cuervo Foundations, he has supported numerous social initiatives that directly benefit thousands of people in Mexico.

He has served on various Boards of Directors, currently with Grupo Peñoles, and previously with Grupo Financiero Banamex and Grupo Aeroméxico. He is also involved in organizations such as the Mexican Business Council, the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), the Mexican Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE), and the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO). Additionally, he supports nonprofit organizations including the National Museum of Art (MUNAL), Papalote Children’s Museum, Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, and Fundación Jose Cuervo, among others.

For strengthening ties between Mexico and France, and for leading one of Mexico’s most globally significant companies, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor, the highest distinction granted by the French government.

In 2020, the Congress of Jalisco honored him for his contributions to the tequila industry, the agave landscape, and his efforts to promote employment, culture, and tourism in the state.

Juan Francisco is a clear example of how business vision can go hand in hand with social responsibility, and how family tradition can thrive through innovation in global markets. His story reaffirms the purpose of EGADE Business School: to shape leaders who transform industries and create sustainable value for their communities and the world.
